What we're about

Whether you're curious about the Chicago theater scene, see a few shows a year or consider yourself a real aficionado, consider joining Chicago Theater Meetup.

Without qualification, Chicago Live Theater rocks !!! Chicago is blessed with incredibly smart, vibrant and talented actors, directors, playwrights and behind-the-scenes people (artistic directors, casting directors, dramaturgs, lighting design, sound design, set design, fund raisers, etc.) -- arguably better than NYC when you consider the diversity, accessibility, affordability, authenticity and availability of 200+ ensemble groups and 100+ venues throughout the city.

I LOVE small stage and storefront theater and avoid the "driving the minivan from the suburbs to downtown to see the over-priced and over-hyped productions they've seen on TV or heard on the radio." Favorite ensembles include: A Red Orchid, About Face, American (ATC), American Blues, Artistic Home, Chicago Dramatists, Chopin, City Lit, Cor, Congo Square, Eclectic, Eclipse, Gift, Griffin, Hell in a Handbag, Interrobang, Jackalope, MPAACT, Northlight, Oracle, Pride, Profiles, Raven, Red, Redtwist, Remy Bumppo, Rivendell, Stage Left, Steep, Strawdog, The Hypocrites, Timeline, Victory Gardens, etc. I make occasional exceptions for Goodman and Steppenwolf productions. Chicago Shakespeare is my over-the-top indulgence.

I'm a fan, but I'm also an advocate, patron, subscriber and supporter. I believe in growing the number of people that see live theater by making it easy for people to select affordable productions. Ironically, I started CTM so that my friends would know where and what I was doing if they wanted to attend. I had no idea we would hit 450+ members in six months -- amazing, insightful, knowledgeable and passionate members who love to smile, laugh, cry and feel.

98% of the time, I attend and host the performances posted on the Meetup. I usually start slotting performances 4 - 7 weeks ahead of time, so you should have enough lead time to purchase your own ticket. At the same time, goods things can pop up with just a few days in advance. If the box office has been able to provide a promo code, I post it. If Goldstar or Hot Tix have published discount tickets, I post it. There's almost always a coffee/snack somewhere an hour before curtain. The post-show discussions have often been as good as the performances!

I've received a fair number of compliments on the portfolio I've curated. However, as CTM has evolved, members have suggested productions that I hadn't considered, and I've gladly added them. Sometimes a member will suggest performances that conflict with something I've already booked. That's when the member becomes the host and we have two (or three) things going on a single evening!

I look forward to meeting you! John
