How many times have you joined a project and found a complete and useful test suite? Almost never happens, right? Some have a handful of tests that got quickly abandoned. Some have no tests at all.
Why is that?
Modern languages certainly have plenty of testing tools. Is there confusion about what tests are for? Is writing testable code too hard skill to learn? Or are we doing a poor job of training new testers?
Like riding a bike, testing is difficult and painful to learn, but once learned, is easy and very pleasant to do. Testing advocates have been through that long ago and have forgotten what it's like to be a beginner.
We'll talk about what we, the software craftsmanship community, can do to turn that around, how we can express the value and methods of testing in ways that will lead beginners on the path to successful testing.
