What we're about

Chilternwalks offers guided walks that are ideal if you wish to experience the wonderful flora and fauna of the Chilterns, get outside for exercise, or just to meet like minded people.

For each walk, in order to make the most of the outdoors, please bring snacks, water and a packed lunch, however if the weather is not suitable I will where possible try to build in a stop for a pub lunch. Also, for anyone wishing for refreshments at the end of the walk there is usually ample opportunity to visit a Chiltern pub.

Please read this page for a description of the walking levels. (https://www.meetup.com/Chiltern-Walks-Meetup/pages/22004610/Walking_level_definitions/)

Level 3 Walk: Aldbury, Aldbury Nowers and Ashridge Circular Walk

The Greyhound Inn

£5.00

This is a 5.4 mile walk through rolling wooded countryside and steep chalk grassland. The walk follows typical Chiltern sunken lanes that criss-cross the area. The walk begins in the picturesque village of Aldbury. There is some parking space in front of the Greyhound pub and around the pond but a better option is in the car park further along Stocks Road. We walk uphill through the Stocks golf club and into the woods to pick up the Ridgeway. The walk takes us past Aldbury Nowers which is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) managed by the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. The site, formerly known as "Duchie Piece" comprises two areas of hillside, linked by The Ridgeway. The calcareous meadow element of the site hosts the flowers of chalk grassland and has butterfly habitats with thirty-four different species of butterfly recently recorded, including the Duke of Burgundy, hairstreaks and the Essex skipper. The site also includes a "beech hanger" a type of upland ancient woodland, and is considered one of the best examples of this feature in Hertfordshire. We continue across open countryside towards Ivinghoe Beacon but cut back to walk uphill towards the Ashridge estate woodland. At the Bridgewater Monument we head downhill to return to Aldbury.

The distance is 5.4 miles and should take 2.5 hours.

The charge for the walk is £5 and due to the limit on number of places, is due when you sign up, places will be allocated to those that have paid.

For all walks with Chiltern Walks the payment is due when you sign up for the walk, please post a comment stating 'paid' in the appropriate walk so I know to look for your payment. Norfolk wildlife weekend: Grey Seals, coastal birds, wetland & salt marshes

Wayford Bridge Inn

£275.00

Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, north Norfolk is home to much of The Broads National Park, Britain's largest protected wetland, salt marshes, as well as several nature reserves of international importance, making north Norfolk a haven for wildlife and birds, and great for walking. North Norfolk is also renowned for its great local produce, which can be enjoyed at the many pubs, restaurants and cafes. Head to the farmers’ markets and local shops to try a variety of food and drink unique to the area including fresh seafood and locally produced beer.

Accommodation
Located in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, The Wayford Bridge Inn overlooks the river Ant and is a convenient base for our walks on the delightful Norfolk Coast. The holiday is £275 for 2 nights bed & breakfast which is for a double with sole occupancy and the walks detailed below. If 2 people wish to share a double or twin the total price is £400 (£200 each).

I can also run this as a walks only option for £100 where you arrange your own accommodation.

For dinner you can either make your own arrangements or ask to be included on the group booking at the hotel or one of the restaurants a short drive away.

Itinerary: All the walks require you to drive to the start point, but they are all under an hours drive and the drive is a good way to see some of the surrounding area.

Day 1: arrive and check in to hotel by 4pm

Day 2: Cley Next the Sea, salt marshes and coastal and marsh bird spotting
Distance: 7 miles

The north Norfolk coast is a remarkable melding of shifting sand and marsh, an uncertain and vague boundary between land and sea. Nowhere is that no-man's land better illustrated than around Blakeney and Cley next the Sea, where old trading ports are now well distanced from the open waters. The walk also passes over the low hills at Wiverton Down, which were created by deposits beneath glacial sheets as the last Ice Age drew to close. This is a relatively flat and easy walk.

Day 3: Horsey and the Atlantic Grey seals.
Distance: 3.5 miles.

We check out at 10am and head to Horsey wind pump for the spectacular experience of getting up close to hundreds of Atlantic Grey Seal pups. The walk explores a coastal nature reserve where the lonely beach is home to a colony of Atlantic Grey Seals and their pups. This is a relatively flat and easy walk.

After the walk , which will finish at about 1pm, you can either head home or if you wish extend your trip with a visit to Cromer a traditional seaside resort and is famous for its pier and Crab specialities before heading home.

Payment
Payment in full is required to secure your place. If covid regulations enforce a cancellation a full refund will be provided as long as we cancel 48 hours before the start of the trip.

Please make all payment by bank transfer:
