Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Although there are many different variations of this game, our Meetup group plays Hong Kong-style Mahjong (13-tile) and American-style Mahjong (with Jokers and NML Scorecard).
This Meetup group is for anyone who would like to play or learn Hong Kong-style and American-style Mahjong for fun. All skill levels are welcome.
Planned meetup times would be 2-4 times a month for 2-½ to 3 hour sessions. Meetup locations can be at someone's house or it can be at a public venue around the Bay Area that have square tables to play on... such as cafes, breweries, park.
For those who have never played before, no worries. Our friendly members will be happy to teach you. After you are taught the basics, then it just takes practice and more playtime to get better at it.
Please keep in mind this mahjong meetup will be more geared to just playing for fun and exercising our brain cells and not playing for money. We could play for points, though, just to make it more challenging and to practice strategies.
The "etc..." part of this meetup group could be other activities and events thrown in from time to time such as... bowling, poker, game nights, cookbook club, biking, walking, dining out... and etc. This group's main goal is to make new friends while doing something fun together.
Let's get together and play some Hong Kong-style Mahjong. Friendly people, good eats, kick-back atmosphere and of course ... Some MJ playing.
If you haven't played before and would like to learn... no worries, come and join us. Come one hour before and we can teach you how to play. Then after, join the rest of the gang and practice what you learned. Members wanting refresher course are also welcome to join the class.
For those that are also American Mahjong players, if you are interested in playing American MJ during the session, please let me know. If we have at least 4 players, I can setup one table for American-style.
Please bring a small potluck appetizer/dish/snack to share. Be sure to name your potluck in the Discussion. Utensils, plates, cups and beverages will be provided.
Please note: If there's not enough players for at least 1 table, event may be cancelled.
Any questions, please feel free to contact Jean.
