What we're about

Learn how the rest of the world plays Mahjong! We meet once a week for two hours to play Chinese Mahjong. Know nothing about Mahjong? I'll teach you. I first learned in China, but the game is played all over the world. For beginners we will focus on the basics. As players become more accustomed to the game I'll introduce scoring points and keeping track of scores.

If you have a Mahjong set please bring it. I'll ask everyone to introduce themselves and tell us what Mahjong experience you have. Assuming there are beginners I'll explain what constitutes a Mahjong set, how to construct a winning hand, and the mechanics game play. This should take 10-20 minutes. The rest of the time we will break into groups of 4 and play Mahjong. Initially we will be playing what I call peasant rules, no points. If people are interested I can discuss strategy. Eventually, as people become accustomed to the game, I'll introduce scoring. Initially we will just identify the scoring elements of the winning hand but eventually groups can decide to require hands have a minimum number of points to declare Mahjong. I'll try to organize tables by level of experience so everyone can be challenged. I will make myself available to answer all questions while we play.
