Existentialism is a philosophy that emphasizes individual existence, freedom and choice. Existentialism is of the view that humans define and determine their own meaning in life despite living an apparently absurd and irrational universe. While the works of well known existentialist thinkers and philosophers may be discussed, the purpose of this group is to discuss existentialism and other allied subjects in a practical manner with the idea of promoting a deeper understanding in us of this existence we are part of. Typically, each discussion will begin with a specific theme or subject as a starting point for the discussion. But, as all the proposed topics generally lead into each other, the boundaries will be fluid. Discussions on these matters will be done in a friendly and non-judgmental setting, and always focusing on the individual, their own life and how the current subject matter applies to them rather than searching for an elusive ultimate truth. The group is open to those interested in learning more about Existentialism, Existentialist Angst, Purpose and Meaning, Authenticity, Ego and Ego-lessness, Unity vs. Duality, Coping vs. Transcending, The Difference Between Rational and Emotional Understandings, The Relativity of Pain and Joy and What is Time.

It is likely that we'll meetup every two weeks on Monday evenings at 6:30 PM.  But, I will usually not schedule the next meeting until the current one's past.

Endings and Beginnings:
As we discussed in our meeting on September 19th:  afterJan 09, 2016, I depart for Europe until the beginning of June 2017. As I've said, my intention is to discontinue leading this current group before I depart for Europe in favor of starting a new group with a slightly different focus when I return in June 2017.

Given how broken up my schedule looks after Oct 31st, it might make sense to hand the group off to a new leader earlier than my departure in January. Or to shut it down entirely.

The current group is 'our' group, not 'my' group. So, while I may no longer lead it in its current form, that does not necessarily mean it has to be shut down if someone else wants to assume its leadership and continue on. This is for all of you to discuss and decide.

About The Next Group:
In June 2017, when I return from Europe, I want to start a new meetup group which will be very much like the current group in its basic format. It will have some lecture elements to it but, like the current group, it will mostly consist of discussions among the members on the topic of the day.

The focus of the new group will be a bit different from our current focus in that it will recognize that the existentialist angst that drew us together in our discussions is not, in and of itself, the beginning and ending of our discussions and interests.

Rather, that angst is the motivator that drives us to seek beyond the angst. And I now recognize that such seeking places us clearly on the road that mystics have trod for thousand of years.

I know this new approach can sound esoteric and mysterious.  But I guarantee you it is real and practical. What we will seek is in us already and it is no further away than our next insight. I've read and puzzled over  spiritual and mystical ideas for most of my adult life and I assure you they are worth pursuing.

These ideas will challenge your attachment to your ego and they will require you to rethink many of your assumptions. Simply put, they will stretch you.

The introductory statements for the October 17th, 2016 meeting contain a good flavor of the directions I am wanting to take the next group.  If you read that and like what you read, you will probably enjoy where the next group is bound.

I'm not sure yet what the new group will be called.  I will probably work all of that out as I near the end of my time in Europe.

If you are a member of the current group, or even if you are not, and you are interested in joining the new group, drop me an E-Mail at dennis at samadhisoft dot com and let me know.  Once I've begin to set the new group up, I will E-Mail you a heads up about it.

And to the current group's members, you should all know that there is no one in our group that I would not be very happy to have join me in the new group.  I treasure you all.

For new folks who might want to join us: The Christchurch Existentialist Discussion Group is now closed to new members.  We are reevaluating our long-terms goals and if we intend to continue as a group.  Thank you for your interest.  We will update the message here when our current cogitations are completed.  Thanks for your interest!
