Cine-clubs were an integral part of the emergence of the French New Wave of the late 50’s and early 60’s, where students, critics and cinephiles (film fans) met to learn and appreciate the fine art of cinema through film screenings followed by lively discussion.
Here in Singapore, there is a most lively and thriving art scene, especially among film buffs and an ever-increasing pool of very talented filmmakers. I'd like to revive the essence of the great CineClubs of old right here on our tiny island republic.
I will be screening films that really changed the landscape of filmmaking...important, influential and, in many cases, rarely-screened films (mostly, but not limited to independent films) that have not only altered forever the way films are made, but how films are to be viewed.
I hope to see you at a screening soon!
CineClub Singapore is hosted by Phil Gruber, organizer of Singapore Independent Filmmakers Collective.
