In follow up to our Genesis of the Story panel discussion, we are providing a creative challenge for both members of the DC ACM Siggraph chapter, our own members, and open to anyone who wants to participate!

We encourage everyone to choose one of the two challenges below, then create something exciting. The deadline will be May 20, 2021 when we will have each participant present their creations during the Zoom meeting. As an added incentive, anyone who participates in our challenge will receive a complementary 1 year membership to the Washington DC ACM SIGGRAPH chapter. If you are already a member, we will extend your membership for a year.

If you choose to participate, we do have a few rules:

  • No obscene or vulgar artwork. While we respect the right for artists to express themselves, we have a diverse audience so please do not submit work with nudity or work which is overtly sexual in nature. Works with extreme, graphically violent acts would also fall into this category.

  • No political or religious artwork. Again, while we respect the right for artists to express themselves, our chapter cannot become a platform for political or religious agendas.

Please let us know if you will be participating.

We look forward to seeing your creations!

  • Troy’s Challenge –

Challenge: 3D Story Challenge with a single render

Utilize the provided 3D model (Free model graciously provided by Humano3d.com) at the following Dropbox link:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oc90jpva09hupsy/AAAhrQP3_G0mHsKJKG9MGoL0a?dl=0

A file titled DC_SIGGRAPH_Logo_Collection.zip containing our chapter logos in PNG and Adobe Illustrator formats is also located in the DropBox for those who wish to use their logo.

The 100K polygon model is in .fbx format which everyone should be able to import into their respective 3d program. It comes with 6K textures (diffuse, normal and masks) with 4 variations on the color of her outfit. The provided masks can be used to further customize parts of the texture map such as skin tone, hair color, shirt color, etc..

Any additional models, textures, etc. can be used for this story. Come up with a title that points the viewer in the general direction of your story. Anything goes!

Is she sitting on a bench waiting for her date? Is she looking lovingly at a Zombie? It’s your story. What does her body language and/or facial features convey to you? Would it work better if you replaced her head with something else to show that playing around with DNA can lead to something scary, cool, or whatever? Or replace her feet with robotic ones showing enhanced running performance? Even something as easy as throwing a face mask on her to show portraits during a pandemic? There are a myriad of stories that can be told with this simple sitting character. Let your imagination flow….

  • Mark’s Challenge –

Challenge: If the Washington DC ACM SIGGRAPH chapter were a movie, what would the title sequence look like?

The title sequence to a movie sets the mood for what is to come. Use your imagination to envision our chapter as a movie. Will it be a comedy, a drama, a mystery? This is up to you. Use your favorite software package to create your masterpiece or, try a software package you have never used before.

If you need a bit of inspiration, check out:

This is not a competition, but an opportunity to let your creative imaginings take flight. We hope you participate, or join us if you don't, to see what others create.
