Artemis, Patron Goddess of the Amazons
Details
Artemis, according to Greek mythology, is one of the Virgin Goddesses who remained independent and free of the domestic responsibilities of marriage. She is the Goddess of women in childbirth, Goddess of all animals domestic and wild, Goddess of the hunt, Goddess of agriculture, Goddess of death and rebirth, and Goddess of the Moon. These traits are very similar to those attributed to the ancient Mother Goddess of the Neolithic era. Her symbols, the moon and the double axe, are also symbols of the Neolithic Mother Goddess.

Artemis was also a warrior goddess and the patron goddess of the Amazons who are thought to have been a resistance movement to the patriarchal tribes who were moving into their homeland and taking control of the land. She was paradoxical in that she was both the nurturing nature goddess of Ephesus, as well as the fierce warrior goddess of the Amazons.
