October CircleSing!
Come make ecstatic, spontaneous choral music with us! We gather for two hours of improvised group singing on the third Wednesday of every month. Sofia Ribeiro will be getting the jam going this month. There are many ways that people have tried to describe this wonderful thing that we call CircleSinging (spontaneous choral music, drum circle for singers...) While there are no words that can truly convey what it's like to experience CircleSinging, here's what WeBe3 (Rhiannon, David Worm & Joey Blake) have to say about it: "This bold experiment in music making is a participatory ritual, allowing a sharing of culture through the medium of music, the voice in all its forms and colors. Singers gather in a circle with a conductor in the center. Intention is declared. Four improvised patterned parts are given to the Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass sections. These patterns are changed and shifted by the conductor so that the singing continues for long stretches, creating a rich, deep and joyful experience. This form calls forth a wonderfully primal connectedness among the singers, strengthening relationships and developing leadership. Singers are invited to solo over this hearty vocal orchestra which requires both courage and musical focus. Working this way stretches both individual and ensemble capability. Because we sing in an invented language in this form, it is accessible across borders and cultures, making it possible to create this musical magic anywhere on the planet." *** Bringing water to drink is recommended. Alchemical does not sell water bottles. Admission is $15 - $30 sliding scale. Please be generous to the extent you can afford. (No one will be turned away for lack of funds.) What we're about

CircleSinging NYC is a monthly Vocal Improv jam session, a community of singers and music lovers, a really fun way to spend an evening. We get together on the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 7 - 9pm and sing music that's made up on the spot. It can sound like Jazz, Gospel, Classical, R&B, Rock, Doo Wop, Gregorian Chant, African, Tuvan, Tibetan, Middle Eastern, you name it. An instant vocal ensemble with solos. CircleSinging is a form of facilitated Vocal Improv which could be described as “a drum circle for singers” or “improvised choral music.” During the course of the ever-changing chant, the leader develops and gives parts to a circle of singers, which in turn supports individual solos. Both participating in and witnessing the creation of the music that emerges is an exhilarating and joyful experience.
