The Godfather (1972) is an American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, and Diane Keaton. The movie is based on Mario Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel of the same name.

The year is 1945 and Marlon Brando plays Vito Corleone (the Godfather/Don), who is the aging patriarch of the Corleone crime family in New York City. His youngest son Michael (Al Pacino) has returned from WWII just in time for his sister's wedding. All of Michael's family is involved with the Mafia, but Michael just wants to live a normal life. The business of the family is just like the head of the family, kind and benevolent to those who give respect, but given to ruthless violence whenever anything stands against the good of the family. Don Vito lives his life in the way of the old country, but times are changing. An up and coming rival of the Corleone family wants to start selling drugs in New York, and needs the Don's political influence to further his plan. The clash of the Don's fading old world values and the new ways will demand a terrible price, especially from Michael, all for the sake of the family.

The Godfather is often regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. It was the highest grossing film of 1972 and was nominated for eleven Oscars and won three - Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It lost the Oscars in the Best Supporting Actor (despite The Godfather having three different actors nominated) and the Best Director categories to Cabaret (1972). It also won five Golden Globes (a record it held until 2017) for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor - Drama, Best Screenplay, and Best Score. On the American Film Institute's 1998 list of the 100 Best American films of all time, The Godfather appeared at position number three and was only bested by Citizen Kane (1941) and Casablanca (1942). On the updated 2007 AFI Top 100 list, The Godfather sneaked up one position and was only beat by Citizen Kane.

The movie is amongst the 383 movies on Roger Ebert's list called The Great Movies, a collection of movies that Mr. Ebert deemed "great" and worth recommending to others.
