Introduction and "Practical Hooks"

Details

Welcome to our first meetup! We will be starting with general introductions and facilitating a meta-discussion about the meetup -- what topics are you interested in, how should we organize the meetup, and what are you looking to get out of the meetup?

We are also going to hit the ground running with our first talk, delivered by Dan Ott.

Pizza and soda will be provided courtesy of Sprokets. You can park in the lot directly in front of Tech Elevator, on Euclid Ave.

Practical Hooks

You’ve read the docs and done the tutorials - but now it’s time to integrate hooks into your real-world applications. It turns out there’s a lot to think about! When do I use useState vs useReducer? How do I know when I have to wrap a function in useCallback? How do I convert an existing class component to use Hooks? What kinds of things can I do in useEffect, and what the heck goes in that dependency array?

React’s Hooks API provides a set of tools that allow us to create predictable and reusable stateful components, but they require a new way of thinking that can be a bit different than “traditional” React development. In this talk, we’ll go over some real-world situations and examine how to implement Hooks effectively and confidently.
