Memorial Day Weekend at Albany this year?

Hi all,

While it doesn't quite feel like it yet, spring is upon us. That means getting outdoors before it gets too insanely hot! Everyone and their grandmother flocks to Rumney during Memorial Day Weekend, which makes me want to try another sport location: Thacher Park near Albany. It's closer to the city, so less driving = more climbing. We will definitely go to Rumney, but maybe during a four-day weekend instead of a three-day weekend. Rumney is a bit of a trek, so it'd be nice to get more climbing by going over a longer weekend.

I'm proposing renting a house in Albany and driving up the afternoon of Friday, May 25th. We can then climb all day Saturday and Sunday and part of Monday before returning to the city Monday afternoon. To avoid insane city traffic and insane city rental prices, I tend to get a car rental out of White Plains. Makes all the difference!

Anyone interested should already be an experienced outdoor lead climber. Thacher isn't as large as Rumney and, as such, it has limited easy and moderate routes. You'll have more options if you're comfortable leading or following things above 5.9. Once someone has led a route, there is the option for others to toprope it.

I'll post something soon, but wanted to put some feelers out there. I don't want to wait last-minute to try to book a house or car because they'll all be rented out.

Let's get excited! Contact me if you're interest or if you have other outdoor climbing ideas.

Climb on!
