"Cocoa Risers Reading" launched in 2016 and has hosted nearly 40 book discussions! We've even participated in a few books-to-movie screenings and author events. We've gone back to being a FREE book club. Please make sure to update your RSVP for events so I can provide headcount for the restaurants we visit.
This club is for people who would like to read books by black authors. We will work from lists of top books and group member suggestions. We may revisit some old classics or read them for the first time. We will delve into both fiction and non-fiction, newer authors and literary icons.
If you're new to the group, here are some of our favorites:
"Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi
***"Chocolate Souffle" by Trish Ahjel (shameless plug for my own book! lol!)
"Born a Crime - Stories of a South African Childhood" by Trevor Noah
"The Perfect Find" by Tia Williams
"An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones
We will read one book per month and discuss over Sunday brunch at alternating locations. Don't worry if you can't attend every month - just do the best you can. If we select a longer title, we may take two months instead of one.
I coined the term "Cocoa Riser" to describe a fan of black literature who acknowledges s/he is sexy, funny, smart and so much more, and also wants to improve the global condition by working in community to reach common goals for our families, our neighborhoods and ourselves.
