Codeup Chester - Beginner Python Programming Workshop
Details
As usual January's Codeup Chester is on the 3rd Thursday of the month at Storyhouse on Hunter Street, Chester (the reading room on the first floor).
Codeup Chester is suitable for anyone from complete beginners, who have never written a line of code, to experienced developers.
After the success of our 1st guest speaker last month, we are proud to announce that we're hosting our first guest workshop that will cover Python coding for beginners. This will be delivered by Carwyn Edwards as a short introductory talk on programming language followed by a yo-yo style workshop where participants can follow along.
Carwyn's workshop will use the Python (https://www.python.org/) programming language to introduce the basics of coding to those with little or no previous experience.
Experienced developers are encouraged to come along too to help those learning and/or pick up some Python tips on the way.
Prerequisites
You can save some time on the evening by downloading and installing the Thonny Python IDE for Beginners (http://thonny.org/) ahead of Tuesday. Thonny works on Windows, macOS and Linux. Python itself is bundled with the installers.
For those with a bit more experience you're welcome to do your own thing, the minimum requirement is a recent-ish version of Python 3 (https://www.python.org/) (at least 3.3).
Wifi and Laptops
You are encouraged to bring a laptop with you or you can use the desktop computers at The Storyhouse. Free Public Wifi is be available.
Carwyn Edwards works for Bangor University as a Software Engineer & Systems Architect. He earned his B.Eng. (hons) in Software Engineering at The University of Edinburgh. Carwyn co-founded North Wales Tech and North Wales Design.

Further Information
What is CodeUp?
CodeUp Chester is a mentoring program for adults who would like to learn how to code for free. Once a month we provide a workspace for people with no programming skills to come and learn the basics, with mentors available to answer your questions and help you on your way. Our sessions are also be suitable for people with basic skills who need support to develop them, and even for people with intermediate or advanced skills who just want to come along to a space where everyone is immersed in code! Where will the session be held?
CodeUp Chester meets at Storyhouse on Hunter Street. If you need help finding us, ask someone with a Storyhouse lanyard or t-shirt to point you in the right direction.
What do I need to bring with me?
Your own computer, but if you don't have one there will be a few provided for you.
Opportunities
Co-Organisers
We are looking for co-organisers to help on a monthly basis, particularly anyone able to help with any of the following:
• Arriving up to 1/2 hr earlier or staying up to 1/2 hr after our sessions to help setting up and/or clearing out the space we use at Storyhouse
• Assistance with social media (monitoring the new Facebook page and Twitter account to promote our sessions and engage with potential audience) and administering the meetup and email account
• Organising talks, guest speakers, workshops, visitors, sponsors, mobilising volunteers
Please get in touch if you’re interested.
Call For Guest Speakers / Workshop Facilitators
If you’d like to deliver a workshop or talk either as an individual or to represent your organisation or group, we are now taking submissions! This could take any form you like and could literally be on any subject that you think might benefit our community, whether it’s about job opportunities, your experience, certain languages or methods, or anything else! Your talk/workshop should be no longer than 45 minutes, but could be much shorter too. If you’re interested, please email or message with a short description of what you’d like to do, including details of any special equipment, space or other requirements you’d need to deliver the session.
Mentors
Many CodeUp attendees volunteer as mentors for our sessions. It is also a great way to bolster your CV or give something back to junior devs or beginners. If you would like to be a mentor, there’s no set time commitment or qualifications/experience needed, just get in touch to discuss further.
Hope to see you soon!
