Chasing Health, Not Skinny: A lecture and cooking demonstration

Chasing Health, Not Skinny: Clearing the air about fad diets, weight loss and achieving a healthful weight for all sizes. Let’s be honest, most of us would like to drop a few pounds (or maybe a lot of pounds). Sadly, many are willing to put their health at risk in this pursuit. And often, what is perceived to be the ideal weight loss, is either unsustainable or unachievable. When it comes to our health, skinny is not always where it’s at. What does the research say about fitness, food and weight loss folly? Drawing from a number of research designs and studies, this presentation by returning guest lecturer Lecturer Sharon McDowell Larsen, Ph.D. will review what the data says about what works and why and how to achieve optimum health in the process. Plus: Academy director and cookbook author JL Fields will do a brief cooking demonstration of three healthy and delicious recipes ... for you to sample! Class fee $25: ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED: http://CSVeganCooking.com

Vegan Drinks for a Cause

The Burrowing Owl

Join us at The Burrowing Owl to support SoCO Spay and Neuter Association and no kill shelter! Why Support SoCO? They have spayed and neutered over 85,000 dogs and cats since opening in 1997. Along with providing the community with low-cost sterilizations and preventative vet care, we have several other programs we are proud of! They have a NO-KILL SHELTER where they house over 100 cats and kittens, including those with special needs. Their veterinary team treats their issues and when they are available, they are placed for adoption! They also house many dogs for adoption! SoCO Paw Responders: a professional, skilled team of rescuers specializing in trapping difficult cases of dogs that have been abandoned or involved in car accidents, including mountain rescues. SoCO Bottle Feeding Program: a life-saving specialized program to train fosters and other animal welfare organizations to care for and successfully raise neonatal kittens. They saved over 130 neonatal kittens in 2018! Feeding Pets of the Homeless: volunteers bag food to provide to 9 agencies in Pueblo to feed the pets of Pueblo’s homeless. We have received several certificates from the national program Feeding the Pets of the Homeless for our efforts in providing more food than any other agency in the nation! Sunshine Vouchers: providing free rabies shots to the pets of Pueblo’s homeless, along with transportation to and from our clinic. This safeguards not only the homeless but the community from a potential rabies outbreak. How Vegan Drinks for a Cause Works: Come in, grab a seat anywhere, order food and drink and learn about the important work of our beneficiary organization. _____ Colorado Springs Vegan Events hosts Vegan Drinks for a Cause, a social opportunity for local vegans, vegetarians, and the veg-curious, to get to know one another and to get to know organizations dedicated to changing the world for animals and promoting veganism. Held at The Burrowing Owl, we share literature from one spotlight organization to provide our members information about the group. We will also have a donation jar on hand so that we can all make a contribution of any size to support the work of the spotlight organization. To date, we have raised $7,804.81 This is a great way to meet new friends while learning about organizations doing important work on behalf of humans and animals.
