Hello!

Our fantastic fall line-up in now making its way to the calendar! We just added two new events -- Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in GRAVITY plus Tom Hanks in CAPTAIN PHILLIPS!  You can check out details for those below.  Next up is the always fun, MANHATTAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL! Check out complete details on these events along with our Fall Movie Preview below!

MANHATTAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL AND PIZZA BUFFET at Gateway Film Center on Sunday, September 29th!

  • One World * One Week * One Festival! Make that one "FUN" festival, a great time together and a blast of an event!
  • Whether you’re a fan of short films or not, this event is for you! Ten short films selected from all over the globe are shown back-to-back with a short intermission. The whole thing takes about as long as a regular movie and the short films selected are remarkably good! After viewing the film shorts, global audience members (including YOU) get to vote to select this year's winner!
  • We were able to arrange a great deal with the Gateway for this event! Pre-payment of just $20 per person includes all of the following: admission to the Film Festival, voting ballot, and a private pizza buffet (with 4 kinds of pizza, two meaty, two veggie) for our group! Also includes unlimited FREE soda and all taxes, tips and fees! In addition, a bartender and full bar will be available.
  • Complete details, including links to a trailer, short film descriptions, interviews with the directors, and sign-up information can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/Columbus-Movie-Group/events/121866102/

JUST ADDED: GRAVITY at Cinemark Gahanna on Friday, October 11th!

  • We're calling GRAVITY our official, heart-pounding, thrilling, and visually spectacular start of the Oscar season!
  • Film Description: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in this thriller about a medical engineer and a veteran astronaut. When performing a seemingly routine space walk, disaster strikes leaving them completely alone in the unforgiving realm of space! Gravity Reviews have been spectacular and if the thunderous ovation at the Toronto Film Festival is any indication, we're in for something special!
  • We'll plan to see Gravity on Friday, October 11th at Cinemark Gahanna. Complete details will be announced as the date gets closer.

JUST ADDED: CAPTAIN PHILLIPS at Cinemark Gahanna on Friday, October 18th!

  • Captain Phillips is the first of what looks like two great Tom Hanks films this fall!
  • Film Description: CAPTAIN PHILLIPS is based on the true story and multi-layered examination of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates -- the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.
  • We'll plan to see Captain Phillips on Friday, October 18th at Cinemark Gahanna. Complete details will be announced as the date gets closer.
  • To sign up to join Carlos at this event, click here: http://www.meetup.com/Columbus-Movie-Group/events/136145042/

CMG FALL MOVIE PREVIEW:  This Oscar season is looking exceptional! We've already seen a couple early potential candidates with Fruitvale Station, The Butler, and Blue Jasmine. And two more (Gravity and Captain Phillips).  On the horizon, we've got lots more to get excited about! We may not be able to get all of these on the calendar but we'll do our best!

  • GRAVITY: Just added to the calendar!  Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney team up as astronauts drifting in space following an accident. Oscar buzz is high for Sandra Bullock's performance in what should be a fantastic film!
  • CAPTAIN PHILLIPS: Just added to the calendar!  The first of two Tom Hanks films scheduled to hit theaters this fall. This film tells the true story of the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates -- the first US cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years.
  • 12 YEARS A SLAVE: Lots of buzz, amazing reviews and a thunderous standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival make 12 Years a Slave one not to be missed! This film tells the story of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York who is abducted and sold into slavery. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt.
  • THE COUNSELOR: This dramatic crime thriller finds a lawyer in over his head as he gets involved in drug trafficking. Once again, starring Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender. Also starring Javier Bardem and directed by Ridley Scott.
  • ENDER'S GAME: Lots of high expectations for this sci-fi adventure based on the best-selling and book by Orson Scott Card!
  • THOR: THE DARK WORLD: Avenger THOR returns in the follow-up to last year's surprisingly good action adventure! Starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman.
  • THE WOLF OF WALL STREET: The first of three "must see" films this fall! The Wolf of Wall Street tells the true story of a wealthy stock-broker living the high life until his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. Starrin Leonardo DiCaprio (best actor?) and directed by Martin Scorsese.
  • THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE: We thoroughly enjoyed the first in this series which puts the second film very high on our list! Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Huterson, Liam Hemsworth, and Philip Seymour Hoffman..
  • INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS: The second of my "must see films" this fall! The Coen Brothers return to spend a week int he life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan and John Goodman.
  • THE HOBBIT: THE DEOLATION OF SMAUG: The second film in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy is rumored to have more action and the appearance of the dragon, Smaug! \
  • AMERICAN HUSTLE: The names alone make this one a must see! Director David O. Russell assembles his dream cast of Christian Bale and Amy Adams (of The Fighter) along with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (of Silver Linings Playbook) to tell the story of a co artist and his partner forced to work with federal agents to turn the tables on other cons.
  • THE MONUMENTS MEN: This is the third on my "must see" list! Written and directed by George Clooney, early buzz is calling The Monument's Men "this year's Argo." In addition to Mr. Clooney, the all-star cast includes Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon and Bill Murray.
  • ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUES: Okay, not exactly an "award-caliber movie," but the first one was such a fun movie, the sequel has me smiling already!
  • SAVING MR. BANKS: Tom Hanks' second big fall film has him starring as none other than Walt Disney himself! Also starring Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell.
  • THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY: Ben Stiller stars and directs what is said to be the surprise comedy of the season!
  • AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY: Meryl Streep (in another award-worthy performance) along with Juliette Lewis and Julia Roberts star in the film version of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize winning play!
Take care and look forward to seeing you soon!
