Portland Oregon Professional Communication Skills Business Communication American English Speaking Presentations Meetings Interviewing Conversations

Welcome our American English Professional Communication Skills Group in Portland Oregon!

Our Group

American English Professional Communication Skills Portland Oregon is a social and educational group started by Darren J. Packard M.S., CCC/SLP, a nationally certified speech-language pathologist specializing in accent modification and business communication training.

Group Topics

Topics will include training to improve your ability to give presentations, including your speech rate and speech volume when presenting, your American English pronunciation, and practice presenting; skills for participating in meetings, including how to agree and disagree, argue, give your opinion, interrupt, give a proposal, ask questions, persuade, compromise, use correct intonation, and use good pronunciation, speech rate, and volume; and with interviewing and how to use intonation, body language, prepare for your interview, and practice interviewing. We'll also learn about the language used in business settings, including idioms. Overall - anything that will improve how you communicate in professional situations!

Our Group Members

Group members are persons from throughout the world who speak English as a non-native language. Members are usually professionals or students who have adequate use of the English language (reading, writing, and understanding) but would like to improve how they speak and communicate using American English. We are a fun and welcoming group that likes to have a good time while learning how to speak more effectively and with confidence!

Our Events

We have events every month. Most of our events are free (although I do ask for donations to support the group) or at a minimal cost. One of our most popular events is a monthly seminar. In this event, we socialize before participating in a 1.5-hour-long training in areas such as how to better participate in meetings, give presentations, interview, talk with customers - anything that improves how you speak! The content of the free seminars is exactly the same that is provided in the accent modification training courses I provide for companies, classes, individual students, and universities – only it is free for group members!

American English Pronunciation Rules Stop Sounds Online Class Portland Oregon

Note that to complete your registration for this event, you'll need to register for the class through Zoom. Please use the Zoom link to do so. This will need to be done, and your registration approved by me, one hour before the start of the event. I will close the event five minutes after it starts, so you will need to join the class by then. Any questions, please let me know!

Welcome to our monthly online accent modification class! This event is a great way to learn how to communicate more effectively and efficiently speaking American English.

This is our May 2021 class, which needed to be rescheduled.

This is one of many classes in which you'll learn the correct pronunciation of all the sounds (and sound variations) and intonation patterns (melody) of American English.

In our last class, we learned how to pronounce the /p, b, t, d, k, g/ (stop sounds). We'll keep working on these sounds, learning the rules for how these sounds can, at times, be pronounced differently. We'll learn things such as how sometimes we don't make a puff of air with these sounds and how to pronounce the American English /t/ in words like "water" and "rotten."

We'll talk about how these sounds can be represented in spelled words, what you need to do to make the sounds (how to make the air turbulence, where the sounds are made, and if each sound "vibrates" or not), common errors, and we'll practice these sounds in words together as a group.

I'll provide as much 1:1 training as I can during the class. I'll also provide you with practice materials you can use at home and teach you the best way to practice on your own to improve.

Thanks and see you then!

Darren

Online American English Accent Training Class: The Affricate Consonant Sounds

Welcome to our monthly online accent modification class! This event is a great way to learn how to communicate more effectively and efficiently speaking American English.

This is one of many classes in which you'll learn the correct pronunciation of the sounds (and sound variations) and intonation patterns (melody) of American English.

Note that to complete your registration for this event, you'll need to register for the class through Zoom. Please use the Zoom link to do so. I will close the event five minutes after it starts, so you will need to join the class by then. Any questions, please let me know!

In this session, we'll continue to learn to better "hear" and pronounce the consonants sounds of American English. Tonight we're covering the "affricate" sounds, which can be very difficult to pronounce (they're combination sounds of two different consonants!) due to how they're pronounced and the fact that they're not found or they're pronounced differently in many of the world's languages. So this would be a good session for you to attend :)
