American English Communication Skills for Meetings: How to Agree and Disagree
Welcome to our monthly Portland, Oregon area meetup! This is a group designed to improve the professional communication skills of people who are non-native English speakers. This is a great way to learn and how to communicate more effectively and efficiently when giving presentations, being interviewed, having 1:1 work conversations, and participating in meetings - all while networking and meeting new people! We'll begin with getting to know one another and you may make some new international friends. After this I'll teach for approximately 1.5 hours. In this meeting, we'll focus on improving critical skills for non-native English speakers when participating in meetings. We'll start out finding out what kind of meetings you need to participate in. Then we'll learn how to use language to agree and disagree - agree strongly, neutrally, partially; disagree softly and strongly, and, learn how to soften a neutral disagreement, offer a neutral disagreement, and tactfully disagree. You'll learn very practical ways to do the above learning key phrases and learning the language needed to negotiate with anyone in a professional and well-spoken way, without offending. After learning what to do, you'll have an opportunity in the class to practice what you've learned, both in role-played meetings and conversations. It should fun and you'll learn a lot. Thanks and see you there! Suggested donation to attend this event is $10 or more. Donations for this event are appreciated, to cover the cost of room rental, supplies, and meetup fees **Since interest in our events is very strong please do not RSVP unless you can attend** **This event is for persons who are non-native English speakers** Darren J. Welcome our American English Professional Communication Skills Group in Portland Oregon!

Our Group

American English Professional Communication Skills Portland Oregon is a free-to-join social and educational group started by Darren J. Packard M.S., CCC/SLP, a nationally certified speech-language pathologist specializing in accent modification and business communication training.

Group Topics

Topics will include training to improve your ability to give presentations, including your speech rate and speech volume when presenting, your American English pronunciation, and practice presenting; skills for participating in meetings, including how to agree and disagree, argue, give your opinion, interrupt, give a proposal, ask questions, persuade, compromise, use correct intonation, and use good pronunciation, speech rate and volume; and with interviewing and how to use intonation, body language, prepare for your interview, and practice interviewing. We'll also learn about the language used in business settings, including idioms. Overall - anything that will improve how you communicate in professional situations!

Our Group Members

Group members are persons from throughout the world who speak English as a non-native language. Members are usually professionals or students who have an adequate use of the English language (reading, writing, and understanding) but would like to improve how they speak and communicate using American English. We are a fun and welcoming group that likes to have a good time while learning how to speak more effectively and with confidence!

Our Events

We have events every month. Most of our events are free (although I do ask for donations to support the group) or at minimal cost. One of our most popular events is a monthly seminar. In this event, we socialize before participating in an 1.5-hour-long training in areas such as how to better participate in meetings, give presentations, interview, talk with customers - anything that improves how you speak! The content of the free seminars is exactly the same that is provided in the accent modification training courses I provide for companies, classes, individual students, and universities – only it is free for group members!
