Wetland and fauna habitat planting day at Whitireia Park

Details
We have a range of wetland plants to add in the wet areas in Kaiaua Bay in the park. There is only 2.6% of wetlands remaining in the Wellington region so it is important to protect and rehabilitate this rare ecosystem. We also have a new project site along the bottom of the western escarpment of the park to plant species which native lizards and butterflies need to hide in or feed on. These plants will also help to provide safe places for little blue penguin to hide in when moulting or nesting. We will be adding nest boxes for the penguins before the nesting season starts in spring. Bring plenty of clothing layers if cold, it is an exposed coastal site. If unsure about the weather txt or phone Chris on 027 264 0871. We provide spades, gloves and hot drinks , snacks and a few laughs.
