5th SDET Gathering at Which?

Speakers: Kostas Mamalis, Antony Marcano and Jan Molak

Title: The Journey Beyond the Page Object pattern

Many people who use Selenium/WebDriver (often found behind Cucumber-JVM) will have employed the Page Object pattern as a way of reducing duplication and brittleness of GUI-test code. Unfortunately, as a test suite grows and we face testing more sophisticated web applications, limitations of the Page Object pattern begin to surface. Tests become harder and harder to add, code duplication begins to grow and, in an age of dynamic, AJAX-based, Javascript enhanced GUIs, what is a “page”? In this session, Antony Marcano will talk about the origins of an alternative pattern he identified and support Jan Molak and Kostas Mamalis discussion of how the pattern has evolved, been named and proven in a large, financial institution.

Kostas Mamalis, co-founder of MasterThought Ltd. is an Agile Software Developer in Test (SDET) with 13 years of experience in software development & testing across different industries (telecoms, media, investment banking, finance, e-commerce etc.), of which 8 years in agile projects. His main experience is on creating automation frameworks in Java, Scala or C#. He is a Certified Scrum Master & Product Owner, passionate about open source projects, agile practices & software quality. Along with Kingsley Hendrickse (co-founder of MasterThought Ltd.) he provides professional training on automation, agile testing & BDD. He's married and father of two, Debbie (10 years) and Ethan (6 years). In his spare time, he plays the guitar and does voluntary work.

Jan Molak, founder of SmartCode Ltd, is an agile software developer and team leader who spent last twelve years building and shipping applications ranging from websites and CMSes to search engines, video games and complex financial systems. When he's not busy helping organisations improve their software development practices and embrace continuous delivery, he builds open-source software to demonstrate and promote XP practices and the power of automation.

Antony Marcano, a co-founder of RiverGlide, has spent the better part of 20 years in technology and innovation. His experience includes delivering mobile apps, streaming media, telecommunications, e-commerce, web apps and more. With over 13 years experience of XP and other Agile methodologies, Antony now spends much of his time advising, coaching, consulting and guiding organisations in innovation, lean & agile values and culture, agile product development and agile software-development practices–especially Behaviour Driven Development and Test Driven Development. Alongside his regular work, Antony has held the position of Technical Editor for Better Software magazine, speaks at industry conferences and is a regular guest lecturer on Behaviour Driven Development & Test Driven Development at Oxford University. Antony still loves pair-programming with colleagues and friends for mutual enjoyment and learning.

Which? will also be giving an introductory talk on who they are and what they do as part of the digital team. They will also talk about their technology stack including the testing teams which will include their current drive to automate everything in-house. They will also be highlighting where they are looking to be in the future in terms of technology.

There is a £2.50 RSVP charge which will be going to charity, details of the charity can be found here

It was pleasure organising this meetup with Which?, I will definitely keep in touch for future meetup ideas.

Interesting ideas came across yesterday, now I am more interested in the framework flow in a more functional paradigm.

Really enjoyed my first SDET Gathering last night. Kingsley kindly gave me persmission to post this link about a talk I recently gave entitled "SDITS: The Supply-Side Crisis Facing Agile Adoptors":

Hope it's of interest to some...

Interesting new approach. Introduced role of SDET. Not enough examples or real life examples.

Couldn't make this :-( Bad timing again, I am interested to see what pattern you are replacing page object with as it falls apart quickly with complex web apps yet most test suites I see are still using it to do that...

Great talk on using alternative approach to page objects. Nice to meet up with fellow professionals.

I'm QA Manager at 1E (yes we are hiring SDETs) who wants to get more familiar with hands on automation and how to become a Software Development in Test.
