May Ruby Meetup - Talks Night

Details

Hello Everyone,

At Talks Night we’ll have 2 or 3 20-minute talks along with networking opportunities.

Please sign up here if you plan to attend so that we can plan for the number of attendees.

Who is this Event For?

This event is for anyone interested in Ruby or the Ruby on Rails framework. All levels are encouraged to attend, I you are just starting with Ruby or Rails, or if you are an experienced developer. The main requirement is that you are interested in learning and sharing.

Speakers

  1. Stephen Best - Creating terminal apps with RubyAs Ruby programmers our world is dominated by the web yet we spend lots of time looking at 'terminals' but despite this they remain mysterious to many of us.

In this talk you'll learn how the terminal fits into your world and how to write applications for it.

We'll cover input and output, signal handling, and how to create interactive experiences.

Finally we'll see some fun demo projects that use ideas from React.js to make terminal apps much easier to write and to test.

If you're understanding of terms like shell, TTY, standard error, and SIGINT is fuzzy or if you always wanted to write your own version of Vim, top, nethack or even a cool animated progress bar, this talk has something for you.

Rated beginner-intermediate it assumes some familiarity with UNIX pipes.

  1. Florian Munz - Continuous dependency updates with Depfu

I've started my own company called Depfu, we're automating the boring parts of dependency updates and thereby helping teams keeping their app secure and up-to-date.

  1. We have a third speaker on the works, but it is yet unconfirmed. If you would like to speak at this event and do a 20-minutes talk please contact Ignacio (

ignacio@ihuerta.net
