R workshop series: 1. Take a parachute and jump (into the tidyverse)

Details

Hello all,

Following on from the successful first running of the workshop, R: The tidyverse and beyond, last year, a NEW and IMPROVED version is set to take off this Spring. The first of our 6 x 2 hr workshops aims to introduce the "tidyverse" R package to new R users. We'll continue on for a further 5 weeks, Tuesdays 5 - 7 pm, and provide attendees a solid footing in R from which to build on.

The first workshop in the series will see participants dive (or parachute, if we're sticking with the theme) headfirst into the preparation and analysis of a next generation, genomic sequencing data set using the tidyr, dplyr and ggplot2 graphics packages! Not to worry though, the workshop will proceed in a calm, orderly manner as follows:

  1. Introduction to the workshop series and an overview of the absolute, must know, R basics

  2. "Painting by numbers" to get the real world data imported, processed and graphically outputted using a pre-prepared R code

  3. Step by step description/discussion of all the steps performed in (2)

  4. We'll finish up the first session by attempting to re-apply the same code, used at the beginning of the evening, to explore the data

This course is orientated towards people who are completely new to R, and want to explore a world free from the shackles of MS Excel, Minitab, SPSS etc.

Main Requirements:

  1. Availability to attend all 6 workshops
  2. Your own laptop with sufficient battery life to last over 2 hours (this is really important)
  3. R and RStudio pre-installed and running
  4. Access to the Eduroam Wi-Fi network

Next step:
Email b.palmer@ucc.ie to register your interest. Please ensure “[R Workshop]” appears in the subject line. Offers of a place will be issued at noon, Wednesday 7th February.

**Note: Due to the limited number of places available, attendance at this workshop will be via email invitation only.
