Cork|Sec 107

Details
Running since June 2013, every month we have 2 talks focused on Security or Technology - followed by socialising with like minded people – and you can find out exactly what to expect on the About Us section of our Meetup page. Past talk details are on our wiki on http://corksec.com/. All people with any sort of an interest or level of knowledge in Security, Hacking and Emerging Technology are more than welcome to attend and feel free to bring like minded colleagues and friends. CorkSec is a free event (free as in beer, and as in speech).
Our talks come from our community so if you have an idea for a topic (anything for 10-60 minutes) please EMAIL US AT DEFCONCORK@GMAIL.COM . Whether you are an experienced presenter, or presenting for your first time - CorkSec is a great venue for it - and we are happy to help you prepare and mentor you.
During COVID pandemic, talks are taking place online via Microsoft Teams. Teams room opens at 19:00 with talks starting around 19:05. We'll be looking to go back to physical meetings when its safe and responsible to do so!
TOPIC 1: The Rise of the Eternal Botnet - Robert McArdle
IoT botnets are becoming very popular among criminals. End-users never clean up (or even log into) their own routers and the criminals have found ways to make money off of those infections. The addition of P2P capabilities to these botnets brings scary possibilities to these criminal tools. They can now become impossible to deal with from the outside: they just cannot be taken down. These threats will need to be dealt with by cleaning up the routers one by one. This is just not feasible; therefore, we have uncleanable and unkillable criminal tools that will stay with us for as long as the criminals keep making money from them. This is a forward-looking view to what's coming in the IoT malware field. Currently, criminal business models focus from the compromised device OUT, but given our current Working-from-Home reality what happens when these uncleanable unkillable botnets focus their attention IN, instead? Is our industry prepared for an overnight shift to your router or other home IOT devices being effectively a “Criminal Home Hub”?
TOPIC 2: Talk over the return to Physical CorkSec meetup - Group Discussion
Lets have a chat about the upcoming return to physical CorkSec meetups.
- How comfortable are people to attend? What requirements would you have?
- Any venues to add to the list to look at?
- Planning the CorkSec Pub Quiz! Sponsors and prizes needed :)
