Welcome to this Social anxiety online group. Anyone with social anxiety is welcome to join 😊
Its an informal and supportive way to chat with others about social anxiety and anything else we you want to share or talk about. You can say as little or as much as you want.
Sessions are free and are currently just 40 minutes long as that is the maximum time zoom can run for these free online sessions.
The sessions happen through something called "Zoom". Zoom is a free app that can be used on phone, tablet or PC. You don't need to install any software - you just click the link provided and we can see each other and chat - you can disable the video if you prefer not to be seen .
Social anxiety is the fear of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of self-consciousness, embarrassment and anxiety in particular social situations. If a person usually becomes (irrationally) anxious in some social situations, but seems better when they are alone, then "social anxiety" may be the problem.
Situations that might be anxiety-provoking include:
• talking in meetings or in groups
• meeting people (including strangers)
• talking to authority figures
• speaking on the telephone
• lunch or coffee breaks with friends or colleagues
• small talk
• eating or drinking while being observed
• talking to people in queues or at the checkout
• asking for help or returning goods to a store
• preparing to enter a room or shop
• many other situations where sufferer’s feel like they are being watched or evaluated.
Although worries about some of these situations are common in the general population, people with social anxiety disorder worry excessively about them.
Don't worry -“zoom” is easy to use –and you can turn off video or audio sharing so no-one will see you or hear you until you feel ready. Just listening is fine :)
There will only be a few of us to start with and we will all have social anxiety. I hope everyone will feel safe and supported.
We hope to do some physical meet ups when things get back to normal.
Please note Meetup will send you an email when each event is scheduled. You will need to click the "Attend online" or "reserve your spot" button to view the "link" that will enable you to join the session.
Clicking the "Attend or RSVP" doesnt mean you have to attend - its just lets you see the link that will enable you to attend.
You don't need to install any software - you just click the link provided
You can join the session up to 5 minutes before the actual start time.
Many thanks, Neil
Disclaimer This is not a therapy session, and I am not a therapist. This is not a place for diagnosis, treatment, therapy or cure though I hope we can share and support each other and discuss ways to get better.
