Forward thinking municipalities are beginning to consider how to incentivize/mandate deconstruction and diversion of demolition wood from landfills, raising questions about eventual uses and markets. One promising area involves up-cycling of lumber into engineered wood products, such as cross laminated timber. This topic highlights the importance of considering design for deconstruction and adaptive reuse, something that mass timber also has high potential for.

Join us on October 25th to hear from and chat with experts involved in the research, industry and policy sides of deconstruction and reuse.

Two 45 minute speaker sessions will each be followed by Q/A and some time for coffee and chatting.

9:00 am Coffee, snacks and introduction

9:30 am Presentations – round one

10:30 am Break + coffee

10:45 am Presentations – round two

11:45 am Break and chat

Our speakers will include two distinguished experts from Europe (presenting from abroad):

__________________________________________________

KLAUS RICHTER, Full Professor, Head of Wood Research Munich (Holzforschung München) and Chair of Wood Science.

Klaus will discuss the CaReWood project, which introduces an up-grading concept for recovered solid timber as a source of clean and reliable secondary wooden products for the European industry. The objective is to develop and evaluate techniques for converting large dimension recovered wood into new, large dimension solid wood products to complement the solid wood currently used in the furniture, interior fitting and construction sectors.

ANDREJA KUTNAR, Associate Professor at University of Primorska, (Slovenia) and director of the InnoRenew CoE Renewable materials and healthy environments research and innovation centre of excellence.

Andreja will be discussing the European policy on circular economy and opportunities for reuse of engineered wood products.

Our other distinguished experts, including:

SHAWN WOOD, Construction Waste Specialist, Manager of the Deconstruction Program, City of Portland
Shawn has worked for the city of Portland for 15 years overseeing the deconstruction program. Shawn will discuss the perspective from the governmental side, in terms of barriers, goals and initiatives in deconstruction and wood waste reuse.

BRADLEY GUY, Assistant Professor, AIA, Director of the MS program in Sustainable Design, Catholic University of America
The big picture from someone involved in the field for over 30 years. Brad will discuss barriers and opportunities surrounding the reuse of recycled lumber, and share thoughts related to design and adaptive reuse.

CHRISTA MCDERMOTT, Associate Professor, Portland State University
Christa is a social scientist focusing on environmental behavior change, and has previously worked on projects with the EPA and DOE. Christa will discuss her research surrounding social, behavioral, and market areas regarding reuse of stud grade wood in new construction.

JORDAN JORDAN, Building Material Reuse Consultant, Earth Advantage
Jordan will discuss his organization's partnership with Portland Metro, attempting to advance practices of manual deconstruction and building material reuse. This will include advancements, challenges and opportunities for the reuse industry as a whole.

RAPHAEL ARBELEAZ, Graduate Student, Oregon State University
Presenting work conducted with Adviser Laurie Schimleck, Raphael will highlight the scope of a new research project looking at the mechanical performance, LCA, and costing of CLT made from recycled lumber.

We hope to see you there!
Note: We will post access to presentations through webex as well.
