Description

Over the last few years, folks on the Left and the Right have expressed concern that the “other” side is a threat to democracy. One side is being accused of attempting to elect an authoritarian. The other side has been accused of attempting to transform us into the United Socialist States of America. Both sides see themselves as protecting the nation, the Constitution, and democracy. It’s a lot for voters to wrestle with.

Let’s try to make sense of these claims by exploring what the terms “socialism” and “authoritarianism” mean and if there is time, attempt to measure the evidence provided by each side against these terms. Once we understand the terms we can ask:

What questions can we ask to better understand what people on opposite ends of the Left/Right spectrum really want?

  • What questions can we ask to assess the policies proposed by the Left and Right to assess the thread these policies pose to Democracy and the nation?
  • Do policies proposed by the Right truly seem to be removing the safeguards against the president declaring himself King?
  • Do policies proposed by the Left truly seem to be removing the safeguards against the president

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
