ABOUT THIS FILM:

Change is worth fighting for.

“The Best of Enemies” tells the true story of the unlikely relationship between an outspoken civil rights activist and a local Ku Klux Klan leader during the racially charged summer of 1971.

Whatever your view of race relations in America, this film shows us a better way to effectuate change: by winning hearts and minds, replacing our shaming and silencing with warm and engaging conversation.

This film shows us how we can foster cooperation and reconciliation with those who start out as enemies. It helps us examine how authentic, sustainable, and lasting change happens.

In preparation for this event, we would like to share some additional resources that we believe will enhance your Film Club experience:

  1. A 30-minute documentary that inspired the filmmaker to make the feature film. We get to see footage of Ann Atwater and CP Ellis, revealing even more of their process and the nature of their deep friendship.

  1. An article covering some of the differences between the movie and real life

  1. The story of another real-life bridging story between George Wallace and Shirley Chisholm

Enjoy great films that help us see the world differently.

Film offers a novel entry point to examining important topics. Film engages more of our senses simultaneously. It can help us understand an issue more directly, as it plays out in lived lives, whether in documentaries or fiction. Films show, not tell — they help us see the world in a holistic way.

Introducing the CPL Film Club: a new way to cross party lines with warm and engaging conversations. Participants will watch the film on their own after watching a 4 minute CPL video that will explain

  • why we picked the film,
  • how it is relevant to our month’s topic,
  • what you should pay particular attention to, along with
  • questions you might want to ask yourself.
