What we're about

The Peretz Centre is a community of both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals and families interested in deepening their understanding of and connection to Jewish culture, values, and traditions. We provide an alternative, progressive, secular humanist approach to Jewish life through the appreciation of Jewish history and culture within the context of world history, and through the celebration of Jewish traditions. Our doors are open to people of diverse cultures, beliefs, genders and sexual orientation.

At the Peretz Centre we realize the lessons of Jewish history through our heritage of Yiddish values and culture—the heart of East-Central European and early North American Jewish life– while recognizing modern Hebrew as the language of Israel. All our gatherings are inclusive and are conducted in English, with the addition of Yiddish and Hebrew texts.

Exploring Jewish Writers

Online event

This lively group has moved to Zoom and now meets every Saturday, 10:30-12:15. The group reads and discusses English-language texts of prominent Jewish writers. Some of these texts will be translations, others will have been written in English. Sometimes the texts are provided in advance as a .pdf; other times, the group reads aloud in turn, which allows for interruptions for questions and comments, and results in spontaneous and stimulating discussion. If you choose not to read aloud, you can follow the text while others read, and join the discussion. The group is currently looking into the works of Bernard Malamud. For questions or to be added to the participants list to receive the Zoom invitation, contact [masked].
