The Peretz Centre is a community of both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals and families interested in deepening their understanding of and connection to Jewish culture, values, and traditions. We provide an alternative, progressive, secular humanist approach to Jewish life through the appreciation of Jewish history and culture within the context of world history, and through the celebration of Jewish traditions. Our doors are open to people of diverse cultures, beliefs, genders and sexual orientation.
At the Peretz Centre we realize the lessons of Jewish history through our heritage of Yiddish values and culture—the heart of East-Central European and early North American Jewish life– while recognizing modern Hebrew as the language of Israel. All our gatherings are inclusive and are conducted in English, with the addition of Yiddish and Hebrew texts.
Come celebrate Yiddish culture in Community!
This project is a hands-on exploration of Yiddish culture through music and dance and is open to children 10 years and up and their families and individuals of all ages.
Join a Kapelye (ensemble) and enjoy playing Klezmer tunes with other instrumentalists in a supportive and welcoming environment. Seize the unique opportunity to be led by accomplished musicians Itamar Erez and Mike Braverman.
Or: sign up for the Yiddish Dance group, to explore expressivity, gesture and choreography. Claudia Bulaievsky will lead the group in learning the zhok, khosid, bulgar, freilekh, patsh tanz and sher.
Each session will begin with a brief presentation by Dan Carkner on the history of Klezmer. The Music and Dance workshops will run in parallel. The last session, March 10th, will be a party in which the musicians will play live for the dancers and the dancers will in turn inspire the Kapelye to sound bolder and merrier.
When: Sundays, February 24 and March 3 and 10 from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Peretz Centre. March 10th Party, Live music and Tanzhoys (dance hall).
