Health and wellbeing depend on how well your body is nourished by the foods you eat. How food is grown, handled and prepared determines the quality of the food. This session will be a "whirlwind tour of possibilities" and some basic principles. If you live in an apartment you can grow sprouts and wheat grass. If you have access to space outdoors, there is a variety of foods you can grow or forage. The more yard space or land you have access to, the more you can play around with gardening and permaculture and foraging. Foraging wild foods, winter gardening, cultivating mushrooms, season extensions, food storage (noncanning), permaculture, growing sprouts and growing and using wheat grass will be addressed.
Jacob will demonstrate how to grow and process wheat grass and sprouts and the health benefits of wheat grass juice and sprouts.

You can get growing even if you lack tremendous strength and stamina. Cindy has bad back and other health issues and she has learned how to work around these and she produces or forages most of the food she eats all year.
About the presenters
Cindy MoonRose
Cindy has been gardening for 30 years, gardening with hand tools (no gas tillers or tractors) for 17 years, and growing winter salads and greens under cover for 5 years, adding wild plants to her diet for 15 years. Cindy has been teaching various plant and garden classes for the past two years. You can join Cindy's plant class Meetup group and receive notification of plant walks and classes during the year Cindy says "Growing and foraging life style has been very healing and helps maintain my wellbeing." Cindy also is an intuitive counselor, energy worker, spiritual well being teacher and group experience facilitator. She also conducts workshops on communication within oneself and among partnerships and teams of various types.

Jacob Kaset

Present profession: Landscaping , stonework, trees, soils and edible landscaping

Jacob is a peace activist in Code Pink and Nashville Peace Coalition
In 1984 he spent 6 weeks at Hippocrates Health institute in Boston with the founder Ann Wigmore (she introduced the use of wheatgrass and sprouting in the US)
He also studied under Don Krausse (nutritionist in the 1980's)
Jacob has been growing and using wheat grass for 25 years and has performed much self healing including 35 years in AA.

This workshop, facilitated by Susan Shann, will first provide participants with the essential ecological and philosophical principles upon which the "Transition Town" initiative is based. A brief historical background of this worldwide movement, and useful models that can provide guidelines for successful initiatives in our own bioregion will be presented. The central portion of the class will be devoted to focused, open dialogue sessions among participants aimed towards creating a positive, empowering vision for energy descent and community resilience building. Be prepared to listen and to share!

Susan Shann / brief bio
Susan Shann is a long time passionate advocate and activist for the environment, and the co-founder and host of the popular CATV / Davidson County local access environmental program, "Earth Revolution". Now in its third year, "ER" explores a wide range of ecology / sustainability issues related to energy, land use, agricultural practices, food systems, water, "green" building, forestry, solid waste, legislation and more. In the last several years, Susan has participated in multiple training courses including biofuel conversion, financial permaculture and the Transition initiative, which is her current focus. She has written articles for several publications, conducted or been a guest panelist in numerous sustainability workshops, and is also a current board member with the Tennessee Alliance for Progress (creator of the Green Jobs Corp. in Davidson County).

CSA’S AND FOOD COOPS with Alan Powell and Kate Keifling

CSA's. The hows and whys by Alan Powell
If you follow food crops from the field into the world, you will find a trail of money, but the majority of it ends up in hands other than the farmer's. Operating a CSA farm is a way of keeping more money on the farm, and that can make farming a financially viable venture. Once you're aware that a business can be viable, you are free to focus on the other benefits to this method of food distribution.

Diversity- In order to satisfy CSA members, you will have to grow a wide variety of foods over at least two seasons. This will assure strong species diversity on the land, which means greater health and vitality for the land. It also means diversity in the diet, supplying a broader range of nutritional benefits for your members and your family.

Community- A CSA is its own small community, where people can connect with each other, their food, and their farmer. Ideas and recipes are exchanged, and the connection between the farmer, the land, the food, and the eater are built and strengthened. When people have a vested interest in local farms, they will protect the land, the source of their food. Excess food can then be sold to local markets and eateries, providing better quality produce along the entire food chain and keeping money in the community. A farm is also an excellent place for people to gather for celebrations, which can include live music, family fun, and a safe place to play.

Education- Many CSA farms host programs and workshops that can help educate the community in gardening, composting, and various methods of food preservation. These are skills that enrich people's lives, and help them achieve a greater sense of autonomy and self-sufficiency, both of which contribute to a sense of confidence and well being in an increasingly unstable world.

CSA models take many shapes, and we will explore some of these and discuss the pros and cons of each.
Alan Powell/ brief bio
Alan has worked with Jeff Poppen's CSA for about six years, running the operation for the last 3. Alan has a degree in music and has been teaching guitar, playing live and in the studio for nearly 20 years. Alan also gives lectures and workshops on wild foods, cordage (rope-making), and vegetable fermentation as a method of food preservation, and has taught cooking classes as well. Some of the venues where he teaches includes local primitive skills gatherings (TN & GA), Nashville's official Earth Day celebration at Centennial Park, Gilda's Club, local community centers, community gardens, Belmont University, and privately at the request of individuals or small groups. His music degree is from Berklee College of Music (Boston), and he studies primitive skills at Tom Brown's Tracker School in rural New Jersey.

Food Coop
This workshop will explore what you would like a food co-op to offer, how you would like it to be governed. Bring your knowledge, experience and wishes of food co-ops or just come and learn from the fellow participants.
Kate Kiefling is a community organizer and a food activist who is promoting the idea of establishing store front food co-op in the Metro Nashville area.

GREEN JOBS with Green-Coller Jobs Task Force of Nashville/Davidson County
The green jobs presentation will be by Dr. Sekou Franklin and others who are part of the Green-Collar Jobs Task Force of Nashville/Davidson County. TAP is a member group. Our mission is to create family-supporting career-track jobs that directly contribute to preserving or enhancing environmental quality. We focus on providing recruiting and training opportunities for people with barriers to employment, such as lack of job skills, lack of education, language/cultural barriers or history in the juvenile/criminal justice system. We seek to fight poverty and pollution simultaneously by connecting the people who need work the most to the work that most needs doing and thus providing “green pathways out of poverty.”

TAP and the Task Force held a very successful conference on green jobs on Dec. 4-5, 2009, attended by some Cumberland Greens members, such as Eric Lewis and Glenn Christman. We will also be showing a film that features Van Jones, founder of the Green for All movement.

We encourage Cumberland Green members to attend what will be a very informative and enlightening workshop.

I have been blessed (or maybe cursed!) with a desire to create and to make. This inclination, in my own life, manifests itself through involvement in the physical landscape; specifically through gardening. The impulsiveness of our human geography, how man and nature influences one another, is exceedingly interesting and at the same time perplexing. As a culture, we attempt to care for our world - while simultaneously and systematically damaging it.

When offered the Personal Farmer position with Gardens of Babylon I was provided a unique opportunity to help people improve local environments, and thus themselves, through gardening and growing their own food. I’ve gardened everyplace I’ve lived; Seattle, Florida, Colorado – houses, apartments – containers, in-ground plots, raised beds, community gardens. Today I create gardens all over Nashville. Gardening offers better environments, local produce, family-specific food, fewer grocery store trips, ethnically focused plant pallets, edible landscapes, heirloom plants, connectedness to the earth, … the list is endless … and it’s all good.

About Sizwe Herring
William Sizwe (Siz-Way) Herring is a dedicated environmentalist and founder/director of EarthMatters Tennessee, a nonprofit ecology education organization.

A frequent classroom presenter and workshop leader, Sizwe is a certified instructor in the field ofpermaculture, a system of design based on ecological and human principles of balance and growth. In 2002 he was recognized as Teacher of the Year by the Tennessee Environmental Educators Association.
Today, Sizwe’s organization maintains the George W. Carver Food Park, where over 30,000 tons of organic compost is produced and distributed each year. The Food Park is the home of Nashville’s only “land sculpture” made entirely of leaves and compost materials.
The Food Park serves as nature’s playground in the city, and activities are provided for children on a regular basis. Sizwe is also the urban coordinator for Kids To The Country, and since 1994 has led the summer program at The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee.
As part of his mission to bring balance and wholeness to earth communities, Sizwe has volunteered his time as a trained mediator since 1993. He uses his staff position at Tennessee State University’s student center to bring an awareness of both earth and human ecology to college students.
His influence was instrumental in the creation of the campus organization Gateway 2 Heritage, which conducts cleanup and planting projects on the grounds and immediate neighborhood of the university. These ongoing actions are done in memory of several activists who've passed, that dedicated their lives to the Jefferson Street community.
He is a former board member of the American Community Gardening Association and founding member of Manna/Food Security Partners. Sizwe served as "resident land companion" and retreat leader at Penuel Ridge Contemplative Retreat Center from 1998 until 2003.

AQUAPONICS with Dr. Chris Ferrell
This presentation is about an urban agriculture project on the University grounds of Trevecca Nazarene University where earthworms produce compost to be used in a greenhouse which also contains an aquaponic system used to grow fish and vegetables. Dr. Ferrell and his team have duplicated some of the methods used by Growing Power's legendary urban farmer, Will Allen. About Dr. Chris Ferrell
Dr. Chris Ferrell is a science professor at Trevecca Nazarene University. He and his team have attended several trainings of Growing Power. One of Dr. Ferrell's goal is to share the knowledge and teach others how to produce food in the city via urban agriculture.
