New Meetup: Cycle Ride #2 - NE London Canals & Olympic Sites + Bonus Outdoor Swim

Announcing a new Meetup for Cycling Meetup Group!

What: Cycle Ride #2 - NE London Canals & Olympic Sites + Bonus Outdoor Swim

When: Sunday, January 9,[masked]:00 PM

Where: Tottenham Hale Rail Station
Waiting Shelter / Cafe on Platform 2 N17 9LR
London

This is a combined event with the European Meetup, so should be a fun and interesting group!

Start-time: Due to the limited daylight at this time of the year, I will be starting the ride punctually at 10:00, although you will be able to catch up with the group if you are late - bring a map to help find us.

Route: the ride continues on from the ride on 31 Oct, starting on the Lea Navigation to take in various industrial archeology, including the legendary "Hackney Henge" and a chance to count the football pitches on Hackney Marshes. We will then move on to Stratford for more views of the Olympic sites, then trundle down the Greenway (aka Northern Outfall Sewer) to visit the "Cathederal of Sewerage" and the Beckton Alps, returning via the Docklands and ending with a canal ride through Victoria Park to London Fields.

Surface: a mix of tarmac, gravel and concrete block paths, but with cobbled sections and some bumpy surfaces, so suitable for hybrid and MTB cycles only. All out road bikes will struggle.

Refreshments: please get your coffee fix before the start and bring food and drink with you, although there will be a quick cafe / pub stop around 12:30. The main stop will be at the Pub on the Park in London Fields at ~15:00, which is ~300 yards from the pool.

End of the ride: Those who want to stay on can go straight to the pub, where roasts and snacks, as well as Adnams beers are available. Be prepared to sit outside if it is busy. Those who are swimming can join those at the pub afterwards.

Pool: London Fields Lido is one of the 7 wonders of London (in my opinion) - the 1932 outdoor pool was reopened in 2006 after 20 years of deriliction & is now open all year and is heated to ~26C. Cost ?4.15, plus 20p for lockers and hair driers, warm showers available.

Ride length: approximately 25 miles, over 90% off road.

Pace: very sociable, with a refreshment stop halfway and at the end of the ride and other random stops for photos, sightseeing and sharing interesting anecdotes.

Getting to start: bikes can be taken to Tottenham Hale (zone 3) free of charge on regular mainline trains from Liverpool St, or to South Tottenham (1 mile away) on the Overground, but not on the Victoria Underground line.

Getting away from end: mainline trains from London Fields (Liverpool Street to Enfield Town line) or the East London Overground line from Haggerston take bikes.

Bike Hire: please arrange this yourselves if required.

What not to forget: obviously bring an operable bike (with lights, as will be getting dark by end of ride), a lock, suitable clothing for the weather, spare inner tube, pump, lock(s) and food / drink. It is also advised to make sure that you have a bell / whistle to warn pedestrians and dogs of your presence!
