December 9 update - Saturday morning

Hi everyone

Looking at the forecast for the next couple of days - I'm going to recommend that people hold off on purchasing tickets for Longwood for tomorrow morning - and wait until later in the day to decide if you want to head up.

Looks like 1-4" of snow in DC today ending at about 4 PM and 3-5" in Kennett Square not ending until 10 PM tonight.

My guess is the interstates will be cleared by tomorrow morning. And that Longwood will have the parking lots and path to the conservatory cleared at opening.

The big question is what shape will the non-interstate roads be in and do we have to worry about ice on the roads early in the day - especially for people coming from Virginia who have even an earlier start and longer drive than I do.

What I see for options for people are

1) go as planned

2) leave a couple hours later than planned - Longwood will be more crowded but it will be light when you leave home and any ice may have melted

3) stay home tomorrow and head up some other day. The Longwood Christmas display will be up until January 7.

I'm going to watch the weather forecast during the day - both here and in Kennett Square and will make my decision about tomorrow around dinner time. I'll let you know what I decide to do.

We're heading back to Longwood Gardens to photograph the Christmas display.

I visited Longwood last weekend - this year's display has a French theme. It's a little more formal and understated than last years. So lovely and elegant.

Plan is get to Longwood at 9 AM and head to the Conservatory to photograph. Meet at 11 AM at the front of the Conservatory for lunch (so we can get a table inside - it's likely to be crowded). Then more photography after lunch or head back.

Members do not need timed reservations before 2 PM. If you are not a member - you probably don't need a timed ticket if you plan on being there close to opening. But if you want to get one once you know you are going - you can purchase them at

There is a sold out Breakfast with Santa at 9 AM on Sunday - which means lots of kids excited about Santa (and probably eating lots of sugar) in the Conservatory later in the morning.

I'd recommend planning on photographing without a tripod on Sunday. It's likely to be crowded and people often aren't very good at paying attention to where they are going when they are looking at the amazing decorations :-)
