The Story of Lover's Rock - film & discussion
Join BloomBars and the Africa World Now Project as we present: The Story of Lover's Rock. The Story of Lover’s Rock is being presented in the context of this year being 70 years since the HMT Empire Windrush passenger ship was sent to Jamaica to pick up workers to assist the United Kingdom (UK) rebuild after World War Two. The recent Windrush scandal in the UK has exposed that those same British citizens of Caribbean descent brought to rebuild the country and their descendants, were wrongly detained, denied legal rights and at times deported. The screening will be followed by a discussion with London-born Jamaican veteran journalist Barrington Salmon. Mr. Salmon currently freelances for several publications, including The Final Call, Atlanta Black Star, the National Newspaper Publishers Association and The Washington Informer. The Story of Lover’s Rock (2011, 97 min), by Menelik Shabazz - Lovers Rock, often dubbed 'romantic reggae' is a uniquely Black British sound that developed in the late 70’s and 80’s against a backdrop of riots, racial tension and sound systems. Lovers Rock allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing through dance - known as 'scrubbing' - at parties and clubs. This dance provided a coping mechanism for what was happening on the streets. Lovers Rock developed into a successful sound with national UK hits and was influential to British bands (Police, Culture Club, UB40). These influences underline the impact the music was making in bridging the multi-cultural gap that polarized the times. The film sheds light on a forgotten period of British music, social and political history. Directions: The location is a 7 minute walk from Columbia Heights METRO, and parking garages at Target and at Giant. Street parking available on 11th St and Kenyon St - next to Tubman ES.
