Setsuko Ono was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up between Japan and the United States. She attended University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo and received her MA and PhD at the School of Advanced International Studies at the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

She began a career at the World Bank in 1976, establishing Washington DC as her base and traveling extensively, and worked in international development at the Bank for 28 years.

While working full time, Ono started formal art education at the Corcoran School of Art and Design, but only began exhibiting her art once she retired in 2003.

She has exhibited paintings and sculptures internationally and has permanent installations in Havana, Baltimore, Tokyo, and Gunma Prefecure.
