My Son Married Saturday

My son got married Saturday. It was at Herrington on the Bay, a gorgeous setting on the Chesapeake. The ceremony never mentioned God. The officiant was not a humanist but she reported herself as coming from a non-judgmental Buddhist perspective. As far as religion goes her views were very much lacking in the supernaturalism and preposterous evil that we see in much of religion.

I found out that Jeffrey can be an incredible nerd. He wrote a poem for Kristin that included lots of detailed knowledge of the chemistry in coffee and chocolate. He loves coffee and she loves chocolate. So he used the chemical commonalities that he found if coffee and chocolate to suggest commonalities between them as people. Kristin included this poem in her vows and reported that when she heard the poem she decided that this was the man for her. Whoever would imagine that a poem with phrases like “indole group” and “aromatic heterocyclic organic compound” would win the heart of a woman. Atheists tend to be a bit on the nerdy side and we certainly value science and reason quite highly. I'm not sure that I would go so far as to recommend this approach to nurturing a romantic relationship.
