This is a FABULOUS yearly event hosted by a member who, though not a GenXer, has always been strongly supportive of GenX activities throughout American Mensa. In lieu of an August event on the Metro Washington Mensa calendar, I'm putting Dave's event and writeup out there. I put the starting time as noon Saturday, but that doesn't do the event justice; people come from all over the States starting on Friday night just to be at the Corn Boil, and there are usually 100+ attendees. It's the relaxed, family-friendly highlight of the summer, and you don't have to know anyone there to join in. It's Mensa at its very best. --Heather

The TJM Corn Boil will commence at noon Saturday August 25th, 2012 at the home of Liz and Dave Remine in Luray, VA. So what the hell is a “Corn Boil”? Think family picnic, BBQ, one day Regional Gathering, party all rolled into one. We will supply grill, corn, hot dogs, corn, rolls, corn, chips, corn, dips, corn, soda, and of course CORN. You bring something to share with other attendees. Last year we had over 130 attendees from many states and the French Moroccan police bomb squad. Facilities available include indoor pool, hot tub, pool table, pinball machine, 70’ bocce court, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, 8 acres suitable for kite flying, plenty of space for tenting or campers should you want to stay overnight, etc. This is a family event so well-behaved children are most welcomed. We are 5 miles from the world-famous Luray Caverns and near the South Fork of the Shenandoah River so you might want to visit the underground world or go rafting/canoeing also. Last year saw many staying over in the area and going rafting on the river on Sunday. Please RSVP for directions and to coordinate food to 540/[masked] or [masked] until 8/24/12. Recommended hotels/motels in area are: Days Inn, Best Western, Cardinal Inn, Mimslyn Inn, all in Luray and no more than 5 miles from the Remines. There are other hotels in Front Royal which is 20 miles away.
