White Oak/Cedar Run water falls + a lot of swimming holes to refresh 8 mile loop

Day hike - White Oak and Cedar Run water falls + a lot of swimming holes to refresh.

A wonderful world of wispy hemlock and cascading water. White Oak canyon is a part of the life of the mountains you will miss if you stay on the road.

The water cascades over a wonderland of rocks and pools that will tempt you to go wading.

In a little over a mile you will come to the first of a series of falls. Here the trail gets steeper and you will want to take it slowly.

One of Shenandoah National Park's most popular destinations is Whiteoak Canyon and its six waterfalls, with heights from 35 to 86 feet.

There are swimming holes at the bottom of each waterfall, but do not expect much privacy because they are quite popular.

White Oak Cayon itself is one of the best waterfall hikes in the Park. This hike isn't very difficult.
Although this hike can be steep in sections it is still ok for younger children as the trail is well maintained and doesn't require any creek crossing without footbridges.

Being one of the most popular hikes in the park it can be very busy in the peak seasons of spring and fall.

This hike has some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Shenandoah National Park. and combine two out-and-back hikes, White Oak Canyon + Cedar Run, this loop starts at the bottom of the valley and cuts over near the top of the ridge.

With five major falls, numerous smaller cascades and pools, this circuit hike is one of the best.

NOTE: We will be moving as faster as the slower hiker, no need to rum in this one...yea, this is my way to straight things and make-up whit the ones that follow me the last hike and keep all of then running.

Gear list, What you need to bring:

1.) Day backpack
2.) Snacks/food for your self.
3.) Camel bag/bottle or similar for drinking water.
4.) 2 liters of water.
5.) Swimsuit / sun blocker / towel / etc.
6.) A good attitude and a big smile on your face.

Darwin and others, Hi this is Margaret Blaine. Nick, his 2 sons a I were at White Oak around 10:00am but did not see the rest of the group. We waited for about 10 minutes but then started hiking clockwise around the 8 mile loop. It definitely was challenging but we all made it and enjoyed the waterfalls and swimming holes. Hopefully next time we can meet up with everyone. Thanks for introducing me to such a beautiful place.

Is it too late to join? I'm coming from dc. I can take the metro to Vienna if I can ride with someone. Else, I might have to drive. Does anyone have a spot?

    August 1, 2014

I am willing to offer a ride to 3-4 people who will be meeting at Vienna station.

I didn't realize so many other people would need rides. I don't NEED a ride but riding with someone else was a preference. So thanks again Dominique but someone else can have my spot who may need it more. Additionally, I also can offer folks a ride from the metro.

Hey Dominique, due to some reason I will not be able to join tomorrow :(. So I guess that will free up room for someone else. Thank you very much for offering the ride.

People riding metro - Do no expect for a driver to detour from his/her just route to pick you up.
It will be way more easier for you to ride metro to Vienna and get a ride from there' until now no one have ever let behind whit out a ride to hiking area.
Just have in mind that metro don't run until 7 am.

    July 31, 2014

    • Darwin

Simple - Whit this amount of people coming there will be a lot of drivers, once there we ask them to take riders which by the way will have to "tip" the driver for gas expenses, it is how it work, also ask for a ride in advance to any one offering rides.

      July 31, 2014

    • Darwin

What I mean whit my post is do no expect for some one to pick you up from your place because that may incur that that person will have to detour from his/her plane driving route just to please you and not many will do that.

      July 31, 2014

  • Darwin

Can you drive ?? We need your help - Please offer rides to people asking for them and work it out details.

      Still confuse??

      July 29, 2014

  • Sue

Are you meeting in Vienna at 8:30 am, or meeting at the site of the hike at 8:30 am? It wasn't clear. Looks beautiful!
