What we're about

There is a battle being fought in Cyberspace. We all, knowingly or unknowingly, participate in this battle every day. With the use of electronic devices increasing in astounding amounts, these instruments can become weapons for individuals and organizations with malicious intent. Preparing everyone to fight in this battle is our passion and inspiration behind the creation of our meetup group, The D.C. Cybersecurity Professionals.

Join the country's largest #Cybersecurity Meetup group! Founded in 2012, we discuss the latest #infosec topics and conduct hands-on offensive and defensive sessions at the unclassified level. Our dedication to the community has allowed the group to grow over 7,000 members strong.

Our organizer, Mr. Tyrone E. Wilson is a passionate information security professional with 24 years of experience in information technology and has a mission to improve as many lives as possible through education in cybersecurity. Wilson also has extensive knowledge in computer network defense, vulnerability assessments, cyber threat analysis, and incident response. As a former cybersecurity analyst for the United States Army, Wilson developed security structures to ensure American intelligence systems were protected from foreign threats. Currently, Wilson is the Founder and President of Cover6 Solutions, LLC (https://www.cover6solutions.com/); which teaches companies and professionals various aspects of information security, penetration testing, and IPv6.

Wilson is also on the Review Board of BSides NoVA (http://www.bsidesnova.org/review-board/) and Howard University and has recently presented and/or taught classes at major conferences and events such as BSidesNoVA 2020 (https://bsidesnova2020.busyconf.com/schedule#activity_5e4d225ccc15e9b34c000046), BSidesNoVA 2019 (http://www.bsidesnova.org/2019-workshops/), BSidesDC 2018 (https://bsidesdc2018.busyconf.com/schedule#activity_5b89c3f0087f34ceed0000d6), ISACA GWDC Cybersecurity & Risk Conference (https://isaca-gwdc.org/event/cybersecurity-and-risk-conference/#.W9nyCHpKiB0), ISSA Mid Atlantic Security Conference (https://www.fbcinc.com/e/ISSA-ISC/speakers.aspx), BSides NoVA 2017 (https://bsidesnova2018.busyconf.com/schedule#day_59ea59034961360642000308), BSides DC 2017 (https://bsidesdc2017.busyconf.com/schedule#day_5995e1d098fc12c40b0003e0), and DCCyberWeek 2017 (https://dccyberweek2017.sched.com/). Wilson was also a Keynote Speaker at Hacker Halted 2019 (https://www.hackerhalted.com/hacker-halted-2019/agenda/).

We designed our group to be inviting and a fit for all skill levels. So, check out our website and register to become a fellow CyberWarrior, learn, network, and give back to the community.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to contributing to your success.

Cybersecurity Training: Scaling a CIA Methodology with AI

This is an official DCCyberWeek Event! If the most persistent hackers tailor their attacks to specific human targets, then cybersecurity awareness training needs to get to these vulnerable targets before the attackers do. Join Mark Danner to hear how CIA methods of target assessment and AI tools can be leveraged to spot those individuals in the enterprise who are most vulnerable to hacker attacks and deliver necessary tailored awareness training. It’s all about spotting, assessing, developing, and empowering individuals to face the full spectrum of threats, and doing so in a way that can scale efficiently. That’s where AI and machine learning tools, like the ones developed at Intellectmap, come into play. This 30-minute presentation followed by Q&A will challenge participants to adopt a security mindset in delivering awareness training, from new hires to the C-suite. We will also discuss how individual contact at key touchpoints can make new knowledge stick, and the critical role of risk leadership in moving security training from a check-the-box exercise to a dynamic part of the resilient enterprise. Mark served 15 years in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations including providing oversight of black hat info ops as well as leading investigations of threats to US critical infrastructures. On Wall Street, Mark led the Red Team program for one of the world’s largest multinational banks, proactively modeling threats to the bank’s people, processes, and infrastructures, and subsequently joined the management team of what is today GoSecure. As a homeland security consultant for National Strategies, he advised corporations and police executives on cybersecurity best practices. He presently serves as Practice Lead for Intellecmap’s Intellect Security solution. The Cloud is the New Datacenter: What does that Mean for Security?

This is an official DCCyberWeek Event! The advantages of the move to the cloud are many — think cost savings, elasticity etc. Yet securing these new, more ephemeral environments provides a different set of challenges for security professionals. One of the things that all cloud or container environments have in common is the proliferation of data that is produced. This data contains crucial information around the security posture of your cloud environment, but the data is very difficult to see or even contextualize. On October 23rd, 2020, Chris Pedigo, the CTO of Lacework and cloud aficionado covers the importance of visibility, baselining, and anomaly detection in ensuring the safety and compliance of cloud & containerized environments. Inside The Mind of a Threat Actor: Beyond Pentesting

Online event

Red team is a commonly misunderstood offensive security discipline. Red team has been used as a general term for all areas of offensive security just as blue team for defensive security. True red teaming goes Beyond Pentesting and into more adversarial emulation. While there are overlapping skills, there are differences that will be discussed as Phillip Wylie shares his experience of going from a pentester to a red teamer. In this talk, you will learn about the different areas that make up red team operations, common tools, and the path to becoming a red teamer. In this presentation, you will learn about resources helpful for a path into red teaming. Phillip Wylie is a Lead Curriculum Developer at Point3 Federal, Adjunct Instructor at Dallas College (formerly Richland College), and The Pwn School Project, founder. Phillip has over 23 years of experience with the last 8.5 years spent as a pentester. Phillip has a passion for mentoring and education. His passion motivated him to start teaching and founding The Pwn School Project. The Pwn School Project is a monthly educational meetup focusing on ethical hacking. Phillip teaches Ethical Hacking and Web Application Pentesting at Dallas College in Dallas, TX. Phillip holds the following certifications; CISSP, NSA-IAM, OSCP, GWAPT.
