    -----------------------------------------------------
In the vast frontier woods of what was called "the Ohio Country," a young, inexperienced Virginia provincial officer named George Washington set off a series of events in 1754 that would soon set off the wide-scale conflict called the French and Indian War in America, and the Seven Years' War in Europe. Based at a crude log fort called Fort Necessity in today's western Pennsylvania, Col. Washington led a small detachment of Soldiers in search of suspected French spies in May. The ensuing skirmish that pitted the Virginians and their Indian allies against colonial French troops ended in bloodshed, further violence that summer, and eventually to an all out imperial war engulfing Great Britain, France, Spain, American colonists, and Native Americans. Join in a one-hour presentation exploring George Washington's first command, his initiation into warfare, and decisions he took that sparked a world war.

Elizabeth Maurer is the Chief of Programs & Education at the National Museum of the United States Army. She polished her George Washington bona fides as an Education Specialist with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and as the Education Project Manager at George Washington's Mount Vernon. Her favorite part of developing the talk was the research field trip to Great Meadows. It isn't often that a field trip is to an actual field.

  • June History Book Club Discussion - "Devil in the Grove" by Gilbert King

    Link visible for attendees

The Supreme Court has been in the news lately, not always for good reasons. In June, we will read about the legal work of a Supreme Court Justice before his appointment to the court. Here is what the publisher says about Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America:

"In 1949, Florida's orange industry was booming, and citrus barons got rich on the backs of cheap Jim Crow labor. To maintain order and profits, they turned to Willis V. McCall, a violent sheriff who ruled Lake County with murderous resolve. When a white seventeen-year-old Groveland girl cried rape, McCall was fast on the trail of four young blacks who dared to envision a future for themselves beyond the citrus groves. By day's end, the Ku Klux Klan had rolled into town, burning the homes of blacks to the ground and chasing hundreds into the swamps, hell-bent on lynching the young men who came to be known as "the Groveland Boys."

And so began the chain of events that would bring Thurgood Marshall, the man known as "Mr. Civil Rights," and the most important American lawyer of the twentieth century, into the deadly fray. Associates thought it was suicidal for him to wade into the "Florida Terror" at a time when he was irreplaceable to the burgeoning civil rights movement, but the lawyer would not shrink from the fight--not after the Klan had murdered one of Marshall's NAACP associates involved with the case and Marshall had endured continual threats that he would be next."

Please remember that this is, first and foremost, a book club. Like any local book club, the point is discussion about a shared experience - reading the book! It is not a lecture series. So as usual, get yourself a copy and read it, then join us for another interesting discussion. We will still be operating virtually.

A zoom link to the discussion will be sent a day before the meeting.

  • The Islamic Republic (MENA 77)

    Link visible for attendees

Following the previous episode on Muhammad Reza Shah (Episode 76), this discussion takes us through the Islamic Revolution and the various interim stages before Ayatollah Khomeini created the Islamic Republic of Iran. We will also discuss the dramatic socio-cultural shifts that occurred in the 1980s in Iran as well as the devastating Iran-Iraq War and Iran's exporting of the Revolution. We will then discuss the political battle between Iran's Reformist and Conservative wings and the everpresent push from the population for more rights.

    -----------------------------------------------------
During the Revolutionary War, the British Army in North America conducted two major campaigns in 1777. Lt. Gen. John Burgoyne led one army south from Canada to seize control of the Lake Champlain-Hudson River corridor resulting in the battle of Saratoga and his army's capture. Rather than assist Burgoyne’s campaign, Sir William Howe led his army from New York City against the rebel's capital at Philadelphia. Author Michael Harris will present his new book showing that although Howe captured the city after his victory at Brandywine, the decisive events of 1777 led to the French Alliance the next year and ultimately American victory in American Revolution.

Michael C. Harris is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington and the American Military University. He has worked for the National Park Service in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Fort Mott State Park in New Jersey, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission at Brandywine Battlefield. He has written two previous books on the Philadelphia Campaign: "Brandywine: A Military History of the Battle that Lost Philadelphia but Saved America, September 11, 1777," and "Germantown: A Military History of the Battle for Philadelphia, October 4, 1777."

  • Enslaved Georgetown - Juneteenth FREE In-Person Walk with Ed Ingebretsen

Enslaved Georgetown - Juneteenth FREE In-Person Walk with Georgetown University Professor Ed Ingebretsen, PhD.
Please note that this is an in-person event in Washington, DC - not an online/virtual Zoom livestream.

    Enslaved: George Towne [masked])
Established as a port city for the colony of Maryland, Georgetown was a hub not only for the tobacco trade, but also the slave trade. Taverns were the site of slave auctions and housed enslaved workers in basement pens.
A 90 minute walk through Georgetown, beginning at the 1796 site of the Old Georgetown market (Dean & Deluca - 3276 M Street NW); exploring the history and commerce -- including enslavement -- practices of the Port of George Towne. We walk north on Wisconsin to Volta place, west to the front gates of Georgetown University. This archeology of memory considers selected sites, in order to understand how a history of enslavement -- hidden, submerged, erased -- persists to this day Georgetown. One example: Georgetown's Healy Hall tower is iconic Georgetown tourism; it is also named after Patrick Healy, a (legally) black man who was known as Georgetown's "second founder."

    Tour Logistics
Meeting Point: Outside of the former Dean & DeLuca at 3276 M Street NW.
Please be on time (or better yet, early), and budget plenty of time for metro/traffic/parking delays.
Look for your host Edward, and a group of friendly people.

Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day and also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Black Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865. The day was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth's commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas, which was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery.
President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, had freed the enslaved people in Texas and all the other Southern secessionist states of the Confederacy except for parts of states not in rebellion. Enforcement of the Proclamation generally relied upon the advance of Union troops. Texas, as the most remote state of the former Confederacy, had seen an expansion of slavery and had a low presence of Union troops as the American Civil War ended; thus, enforcement there had been slow and inconsistent prior to Granger's announcement.

The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In the battle, Union Major General George Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, halting Lee's invasion of the North. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point due to the Union's decisive victory and concurrence with the Siege of Vicksburg.
Between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle, the most costly in US history. On November 19, President Lincoln used the dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National Cemetery to honor the fallen Union soldiers and redefine the purpose of the war in his historic Gettysburg Address.

Gettysburg is a 1993 American epic war film about the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. Written and directed by Ronald F. Maxwell, the film was adapted from the 1974 historical novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. It features an ensemble cast, including Tom Berenger as James Longstreet, Jeff Daniels as Joshua Chamberlain, Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee, Stephen Lang as George Pickett, and Sam Elliott as John Buford.
Originally filmed as a miniseries for TNT, Gettysburg received a limited theatrical release from New Line Cinema under the direction of Ted Turner, who owned both entities. At 254 minutes (4 hours and 14 minutes), it is one of the longest films released by a major film studio in the United States. It received positive reviews from critics, but grossed only $12.7 million on a $20 million budget. It was however considered a hit regardless, due to its immediate TNT premiere ratings success, and subsequent home video sales.
