Tech Talk Thursday - Mike Ressler from Diamond Kinetics

Bio: Mike Ressler (@mressler) is the Chief Technology Officer at Pittsburgh-based Diamond Kinetics - a baseball and softball motion analytics company. Mike has spent the last 5 years at Diamond Kinetics building "The Internet of Swings" with SwingTracker, an embedded sensor device that goes "in" or "on" bats. And recently with PitchTracker, a first-of-its-kind smart baseball/softball that tracks the pitching motion. Mike graduated from Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science and currently lives in Upper St. Clair with his wife and three kids. Title: Testing in the Age of the Internet of "Swings" (and Pitches!) Abstract: After two decades in software development, I thought I had a handle on this whole "testing your code" thing - but that was before Diamond Kinetics threw me a few curveballs. As our notion of "full stack" expands to include sampling data from the real world, our responsibilities expand as well: from testing "just" back-end/front-end interactions to testing sensors, firmware, mobile apps, and data synchronization, there's a lot that can go wrong. Sometimes in very surprising ways. Come hear some of my favorite unexpected consequences of building an accurate IoT product and the nuance of what takes to be "right" in the world of baseball and softball tech.
