Saxophonist and composer Elijah Jamal Balbed is a native of Silver Spring, MD, but has lived all over the DMV area and briefly in NYC. Elijah attended Howard University to further study the saxophone, classical and jazz, w
ith Charlie Young of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and director of the Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra. While in college, Elijah was named "Best New Jazz Musician" in 2010 by the Washington City Paper. In 2011, Elijah had the rare opportunity to perform with the godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown. Elijah performed with Mr. Brown frequently until his death in May of 2012. Also in 2011, Elijah began working on his debut recording project, which was released in September of 2012. The CD, entitled "Checking In", was named #4 best jazz album released in 2012 by CapitalBop. Elijah has presented his own projects at the Kennedy Center, Strathmore, Bohemian Caverns, the Phillips Collection, and the National Portrait Gallery. He is very excited to be presenting his quintet at Artisphere for the first time.
