How does data viz make us smarter? How do we reason with information to get insights?

We need something to orient us when we look at a data visualization. The role of abstraction and narrative techniques are important factors to structuring a user interaction around data.

• Elements of human intelligence: a repertoire of concepts & metaphorical abstraction

• Historical background of graphical techniques & some examples (Genevieve von Petzinger, Christoph Niemann, Diego Velázquez, Pablo Picasso, and more)

• Lessons we can learn: applying these techniques to data visualization and cognitive workflow

• Specific examples of data visualizations & the different user flows they enable

7:30 - 8:00: Q&A, open discussion and topic suggestions
