Subject: [dachshund-427] Rescue Spotlight April 2013

Remember, our April Meet-up is this Sat (4/13) from 12-2 pm at Good Karma. We have a little money saved up after last month, so we can donate to some needy pooches!  So without further adieu....

Rescue Spotlight, April 2013

Hands, Hearts and Paws

"Saving lives ... one dog at a time!"

Little mama Meela

When choosing the Rescue Spotlight this time around, I thought about the enjoyment little mama Meela has brought to so many of us in the group.  I get many emails asking me how Meela is doing, or if there are any updates on Meela and the pups.  (We're supposed to get more pix when they go to the vet next week!)

I have thought about that poor little mama that was going to just be dumped by her people "because she went out and got herself pregnant."  Her owners taking no responsibility for not getting her spayed, or at the very least not keeping an eye on her to keep her away from non-neutered boys!  And then dumping a pregnant, scared little doxie when she needed someone to care for her....

Hands, Hearts and Paws stepped up without hesitation and took in this poor little mama, knowing it wasn't taking in one dog, but a whole litter.  There could be 2 puppies, 4 puppies, 8 puppies--or more--that they would have to vet, feed and care for.  So I thought in honor of brave little Meela and those precious little puppies, we would donate to Hands, Hearts and Paws this month and help care for Meela, her sweet babies, and many of their 4 legged friends.

A little about HHP...

Poncho the beagle Smokey, lab border collie mix

Hands, Hearts and Paws is an Omaha based rescue founded on Sept 1, 2011.

Raider-Great Pyrenees Bonnie-Shar Pei/pug

After working in different dog rescues for several years, Debbie and Karen teamed up to begin HHP.

Tex-beagle/hound mix Rally the pointer

It's an all breed dog rescue, as Debbie says, both she and Karen love all dogs, all sizes, shapes, ages and breeds.

HHP isn't really sure what Maddox is!  They just know he's going to be really big when he reaches full size!

They rescue from kill facilities, puppy mills and the occasional owner surrender in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas or wherever a dog needs rescue and they are able to find transport.

Triscuit has the cutest face, but I'm not sure that his head looks like it fits his body! He almost looks likes he's been photoshopped! They have him listed as an Italian Greyhound/Min Pin mix.

HHP credits their hard working volunteers and fosters with their success and ability to rescue and rehome so many dogs.  There are currently 46 dogs (many of them puppies born in rescue like Meela's puppies) on their Petfinder site looking for homes, and as always, there are others waiting for foster homes to open up so HHP can take them in.

Poor Trixie was found abandoned on the streets.  She had been neglected and left to die.  She had a severe case of demodectic mange so bad so that her eyes were completely swollen shut. Due to her lifetime of neglect she was also left with an untreated hernia causing extreme pain. She needed multiple surgeries and many trips to the vet, but is happy and healthy now.

Without such dedicated people, they wouldn't be able to provide these dogs with the kind of care and love they deserve, and help them find the best possible home for each dog based on their individual needs.  And without such dedicated people (including founders Karen and Debbie), they wouldn't be "Saving lives ... one dog at a time!"

To find out more about any of the dogs pictured, check out HHP on facebook or on Petfinder (

Hope to see you all on Saturday!  Georgie needs somewhere to play where his paws won't get muddy!!!

PS  Our very own Lisa and Julie Nelson are proud HHP fosters.  In fact, they are going to take in 3 puppies!!!  Good luck Nelsons!!!
