What we're about

ODSC brings together the open-source and data science communities with the goal of helping its members learn, connect and grow.

The focus of this Meetup group is to allow ODSC to work with Meetup groups, non-profits, and other organizations to present informative lectures, workshops, code sprints and networking events to help grow the use of open source languages and tools within the data science and data-centric community. As such, our specific goals are:

1. Build a collaborative group to work with other Meetup groups, non-profits, and other organizations.

2. Promote the use of open source languages and tools amongst data scientists and others.

3. Host educational workshops.

4. Spread awareness of new open source languages and tools that can be used in data science.

5. Contribute back to the open-source community.

Who is this meetup for?

• Data engineers, analysts, scientists, and other practitioners

• R, Python and other software engineers who work with data or want to learn

• Data visualization developers and designers

Hyper-Parameter Optimization: A First-Class Citizen In MLOPs

Topic: Hyper-Parameter Optimization: A First-Class Citizen In MLOPs

Speaker: Ariel Biller, Evangelist at ClearML

Researcher first, developer second. Over the last 5 years, Ariel has worked on various projects; from the realms of quantum chemistry, massively-parallel supercomputing to deep-learning computer vision. With AllegroAi, he helped build an open-source R&D platform (Allegro Trains) and later went on to lead a data-first transition for a revolutionary nanochemistry startup (StoreDot). Answering his calling to spread the word, he recently took up the mantle of Evangelist at ClearML. Ariel received his PhD in Chemistry in 2014 from the Weizmann Institute of Science. Ariel recently made the transition to the bustling startup scene of Tel-Aviv, and to cutting-edge Deep Learning research.

Abstract: Hyperparameter Optimization (HPO), also known as hyperparameter search, tuning, or sweep, is a vastly utilized pattern in model-based methods. Usually, HPO “in the wild” is geared towards the improvement of model performance with fixed input data (i.e., tweaking params on the same dataset). Nevertheless, it is rarely used in R&D settings as a systematic way to explore the parameter space. There are two reasons for that: Computational costs, and infrastructure prerequisites. In other words - Training many models is expensive, and being able to orchestrate a large search requires quite a bit of engineering support. Using open-source, however, you could not only reduce the costs - but can completely tackle the infrastructure hurdles - all with about two extra lines of code added to the training script.
In this webinar, we will show how to organize and own the HPO process as a component of your MLOps, and allow for easy “ramp-up” from working code to intricate searches. We will briefly present HPO and MLOps, and detail an MLOps-enabled HPO workflow. Then, we will use the open-source ClearML to integrate HPO with an existing codebase.Following the integration, we will show both low-code and no-code approaches to perform HPO using Optuna with AWS auto-scaling on spot instances, incorporating early-stopping for underperforming hyperparameter combinations.

Level BEGINNER

Instructor's bio: Noah Gift, MLOps Expert | Solopreneur | Author | Duke & Northwestern & UC Davis Adjunct Professor | CTO | Pragmatic AI Labs

Author of Practical MLOps, Pragmatic AI, and Python for DevOps. Adjunct Professor at Duke MIDS & Northwestern Graduate Data Science & AI. Held business roles including CTO, general manager, consulting CTO, and cloud architect. Consults with start-ups and other companies on machine learning and cloud architecture.

AWS ML Hero, Python Software Foundation Fellow, AWS Subject Matter on Machine Learning, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Machine Learning Specialist, AWS Certified Big Data Specialist, Google Certified Professional Architect, and AWS Academy Accredited Instructor. Published books, videos, and courses on cloud machine learning, DevOps, Python, Data Science, Big Data and AI.

Abstract:

Getting your models into production is the fundamental challenge of machine learning. MLOps offers a set of proven principles aimed at solving this problem in a reliable and automated way. This training takes you through what MLOps is (and how it differs from DevOps) and shows you how to put it into practice to operationalize your machine learning models. Current and aspiring machine learning engineers--or anyone familiar with data science and Python--will build a foundation in MLOps tools and methods (along with AutoML and monitoring and logging), then learn how to implement them in AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The faster you deliver a machine learning system that works, the faster you can focus on the business problems you're trying to crack. This training gives you a head start.
