Spinning up a start-up has never been easier thanks to technology enablement resources like AWS and Azure. Big Data is everywhere and can be sourced in a wide variety of ways. Data science programs at every major university are turning out graduates who are capable of writing creative algorithms at an increasingly growing rate. These forces have combined to make entrepreneurial opportunities within Data Sciences more promising, and the future is even brighter. Morten has built a few successful companies around this paradigm, most recently with Lumina Analytics (www.luminaanalytics.com). He will share his ideas and best practices in the hopes of educating and perhaps even inspiring your own successful start up. Talking points will include seeking a domain, data acquisition, leveraging time as a competitive advantage and funding.

Dr. Morten Middelfart is a serial entrepreneur with over two decades of experience in developing and managing business intelligence and analytics solutions. At age 25, Morten founded Morton Systems, a business intelligence company which was sold to TARGIT in 1996, Morten became TARGIT's CTO and Chief Product Visionary. The TARGIT Decision Suite is largely based on the technologies and ideas developed at Morton Systems. More recently, Morten developed technologies such as TARGIT's Xbone and TimeLiner to accommodate high-performance competitive analytics through the use of both internal and external data.

In September 2014, Morten launched a new company, Social Quant, which specialized in social media optimization using Big Data analytics and machine learning. In November 2014, he became the Advisory CIO of Genomic Expression, a cancer diagnostic company. Early in 2015, Morten co-founded Lumina Analytics, a big data, predictive analytics firm providing insightful risk management and security intelligence to large, regulated corporations and government clients.

Morten received his MBA from Henley Management College in the UK and holds two Ph.D.’s – one from Rushmore University in the U.S., where he published the groundbreaking book about Computer Aided Leadership and Management (CALM) and the second from Aalborg University regarding his revolutionary data mining mechanism, Sentinels. This man-machine synergy within the decision process is as much practical as it is revolutionary. Dr. Middelfart’s CALM thought-leadership is applicable to both contemporary and future computer systems. His second Ph.D. presents a series of so-called Sentinel algorithms within the field of artificial intelligence, namely data mining, in which patterns for decision making are autonomously detected by computers in large sums of data. In addition to his academic research, Morten holds seven U.S. Patents, and 25 worldwide, for his technological developments in business intelligence and analytics, placing him among the top 1.8% of all active inventors.

Morten has a unique combined commercial and technical background which allows him to comfortably communicate his ideas to a broad audience. He has been the keynote speaker at 50+ international events.

In his spare time, Morten is an avid skydiving instructor and enthusiast, with more than 1,600 airplane jumps and several BASE jumps to his name
