We are planning to have 5 short 15-min talks about the various aspects of data visualization chosen from the following topics:

why datavis? (welcome and intro)

the science of datavis: perception, cognitive science etc.

exploratory data analysis (e.g. R/ggplot2)

presentation graphics / infographics

interactive data visualization on the web

datavis in the world of business intelligence software

the role of data visualization in journalism

datavis: the view of a designer

datavis: the view of an artist

Here are the talks:
Szilard Pafka: Welcome, motivation, intro and overview. I'll talk about the many areas and uses of data visualization (exploratory data analysis, presentation graphics, business intelligence, visual arts etc.). I'll also touch quickly on how to get started with R and ggplot2 for exploratory data analysis.
Alex Nano: Information Design 101. I'll demonstrate the key principles of information design, followed by a survey of notable contemporary data visualizations, finishing with a summary of tools and bibliography.
David Guttman: Data Visualization and JavaScript. The dynamic duo of interactivity and accessibility. This will be an intro to getting up and running. And it will be awesome.
Eric Klusman will give a quick overview of the data visualization products in the Business Intelligence space, and he will show visualizations of the data from the MeetUp sign-up questionnaires for this group, using Tableau.
Jeff Weakley (ChocolateCoveredFocusGroups.com) will talk about the use of video & After Effects as a powerful format for collecting data, finding the story in the data and communicating that story in a cost-saving way to clients and audiences (as web content).

You will have to arrive between 6:00-6:55pm in order to pass security (see more info below).

Venue: Cornerstone OnDemand http://www.cornerstoneondemand.com/ will kindly host this meetup and provide food+drinks. There is no parking provided, but at that time of the day it's not difficult to find parking nearby. Please note that only members with RSVP Yes will be able to clear security.
