Tell us about your abilities and interests in data (and yourself)!

I've piloted the use of GIS maps to show where and why tutor/mentor programs are needed, draw greater public attention to programs, and draw volunteers and donors to existing programs. I've also piloted the use of on-line documentation systems, visualization tools and network analysis in an attempt to help people in the city work collectively to make more tutor/mentor programs available and help more kids through school and into jobs and careers. See the Chicago tutor/mentor program locator at http://www.tutormentorprogramlocator.net.

What tools and topics would you love to have us arrange sessions for learning?

I've operated as a non profit from[masked] and never had must money to build the data/visualization tools or to do the advertising and training that would teach more people to use them. Thus I've depended on volunteers to help do this work, including volunteers from India. While I now operate in an LLC tax structure I still have no money and still depend on volunteers and partners to do this work.

Are there tools or topics that you might be willing to help organize sessions for, to share with other community members? (No pressure--we all help each other out.)

Introduction

I created the Tutor/Mentor Connection in 1993 to "learn all that was known" about volunteer-based tutoring and/or mentoring in Chicago and to share that information to help constantly improving tutor/mentor programs grow in all high poverty areas.

What Daniel F. B. is saying about this Meetup Group

Good idea to bring together data scientists for this purpose. For those who are already working with youth serving organizations, workforce development, drop-out and violence prevention, I encourage you to connect with me and each other in a FB community I've already established at http://www.facebook.com/groups/TutorMentorInstitute/ . If such a sub group is already established within the Data Potluck platform, let me know and I'll join you there.
