2 Talks:Service-Oriented Data Pipelines + Deep Learning & Convolutional Networks

Details

2 Talks. One on Data Engineering. The other on Deep Learning, Convolution Networks, and deeplearning4j (http://deeplearning4j.org/).

(This is a joint meetup with Vancouver Scala (https://www.meetup.com/vancouver-scala/events/229492988/) and the Machine Learning meetup (https://www.meetup.com/MachineLearning/events/229644730/).)

Talk #1: Building a Service Oriented Data Pipeline, Yasha Podeswa (https://www.linkedin.com/in/yashapodeswa) (from Hootsuite)

Like many software projects, data pipelines built by Business Intelligence teams often start out as quickly built monoliths, but over time they can be made simpler and more maintainable by splitting them into a series of tightly defined services. In this talk we'll look at the challenges we've faced scaling Data Analytics at Hootsuite, then move into a live coding session, where we'll stitch together a data pipeline as a series of Scala apps, deployed to AWS Lambda, connected using Airbnb's open source Airflow tool.

Talk #2: Introduction to Deeplearning4j in Scala, Justin Long (https://ca.linkedin.com/in/justinlongfellow) (from Bernie A.I.)

After discovering the limitations of PCA-based algorithms for machine learning, Bernie A.I. believes convolutional networks and deep learning have greater potential for vision-based applications for online dating. In search of a tool that was pure JVM, Long found Deeplearning4j. DL4J is about to become a serious computational tool for the JVM community, and the authors behind the project have designed the APIs to be 100% Scala friendly. Justin will be giving a short introduction to building and training a convolutional neural network in Scala and highlight the basics of using the Deeplearning4j library.

Schedule:

• 6:00PM Doors are open, feel free to mingle
• 6:30 Presentation start
• ~7:45 Off to a nearby restaurant for food, drinks, and breakout discussions

Getting There:

By transit there a number of high frequency buses (check Google Maps or the Translink site for your particular case) that will get you there. For the drivers, there is a fair bit of street parking (free and pay) in the area, especially after 6.
