Meet Our Members: Four Short Talks

Details

Here is another opportunity to meet our members and learn what they’re doing. Note the change in starting time: refreshments at 6 pm and program at 6:30.

  1. John Rosenfelder
Title: Business Intelligence in Music (or "How I Learned to Love Data and Stop Worrying about the Future")

John is principal of Earbender Analytics, providing data solutions for music companies.

Absract: This talk provides an overview of how data visualization is used to analyze and communicate artist and audience development insights in the streaming music business.

  1. Cameron Yick
    Title: Visualizing, Fast and Slow

Cameron is a software engineer, data visualization at Enigma.

Abstract: Effective software provides instant feedback. Frustrating software makes you wait. I’ll take you on a tour of tools from the frontend development world that can make building data visualizations fast and enjoyable!

  1. Ganes Kesari
Title: Conversational AI: Data Story-telling for a Speech-driven World

Ganes is the Co-founder and Head of Analytics & Design Innovation at Gramener, a Data science company.

Abstract: Data visualization through screen-based interfaces have matured, but their dominance as the primary interface for insights is now being challenged by conversational AI. This talk will provide an overview of this fast-developing trend and lay out the building blocks of designing a conversation-driven, story-telling interface. This concept will be demonstrated with application to a business example using Amazon's Echo.

  1. Philipp Kats
Title: Vega: Declarative Approach to Visual Storytelling

Philipp is a data scientist at StreetEasy.

Abstract: Vega is a family of visualization tools anchored around the notion of “visualization grammar” — the idea of separating the mere “logic” (grammar) of a chart from its content and appearance. At StreetEasy, we rely on Vega to help visualize our research projects on our blog. In this presentation, I'll showcase the pros and cons of using Vega’s approach for high-quality, data-driven storytelling and how it can be implemented in organization workflow.
