Program at 7:00 pm
Abstract: Everything happens at some point in time and space. How can data visualization provide geographic and temporal context to the complex systems and phenomena which shape our world? Data scientist and visualizer Will Geary will explore this question through a series of data animation projects, ranging from mapping urban transportation networks to the global weapons trade. This talk will present lessons learned from a map gone viral, and will introduce the creative and technical process behind animating large datasets using Processing, a graphics library for Java.
Bio: Will Geary is a Data Scientist and Head of Data Visualization at CitySwifter, a business intelligence platform for urban bus networks. Previously, Will worked as a geospatial data scientist at the United Nations, and as a transportation researcher at Mapzen. His work has been featured in the Information is Beautiful Awards and the Venice Architecture Biennale, and has received press in The Guardian, CityLab and Le Monde. Will holds an M.S. in Data Science from Columbia University and a B.A. in Philosophy and B.S. in Economics from Duke University.
