The Spiritualist camp known as Cassadaga was founded over 100 years ago and has been designated a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The Architecture is a mix of New England Cobblestone Village and Southern Magnolia Outback. The sights of Lake Helen and Cassadaga include: The Cassadaga Hotel re-built in 1928, Englewood Victorian Plantation Home, Colby Memorial Temple (built 1920), 100 wooden homes, the New Age Cassadaga Camp Bookstore and Lake Colby Park. On Sundays, a church service is open to the public with lovely traditional hymns and enlightening service. Also, on Sunday an open reading session is viewable at no charge where spiritualists and those studying the art will choose participants in the audience to communicate with and relay messages and feelings from those no longer with us in the flesh. The Bookstores are well stocked with new age and meditative items and books. Lunch is available at Sinatra’s Ristorante in the Cassadaga Hotel or later in Deland or Sanford. The audience readings in the Colby Memorial Temple is for donations. If you are interested in a private reading the names and numbers of the readers are posted in several places including the Hotel and the Bookstore.
Nearby Lake Helen Picture stops include the eyebrow house, The Victorian Ann Stevens House and the Cabin on the Lake. Cassadaga Picture Stops include Lake Colby, the Church, The Cassadaga Hotel, and some architecturally interesting homes and decorations. The return trip includes a ride along a Street in Sanford with some Southern Porches, White Wrought Iron, Overhanging Oaks and a small town southern feel to the homes on cobblestone streets.
